Thailand should stop selling cool cigarettes to prevent addiction, Dr Ronnachai Kongsakon, director of the Tobacco Control Research and Knowledge Management Centre at Mahidol University, said.

He cited that countries in the European Union and the United Kingdom are about to prohibit the production and sale of cigarettes containing menthol due to three reasons: Menthol cigarettes are popular among teenagers; to reduce the number of teenagers who become smokers; and to help menthol smokers quit smoking. Research shows that youngsters who smoke menthol are 80 per cent more likely to be smokers for life than those who smoke in general.

"Menthol was first added to cigarettes in 1920, with cigarette companies making a menthol marketing strategy aimed at teenagers. They advertised that smoking menthol is safe, refreshing and cool, making many teenagers fascinated with the idea of start smoking menthol because they believed it was safer than normal cigarettes. The advertising was not true at all," Ronnachai said.

In March 2012, Brazil was the first country in the world to ban menthol cigarettes, said Ronnachai.

He added that it was time for Thailand to push "Menthol smoking prohibition measures", which is another measure to prevent young Thai smokers from cigarette addiction. During the Covid-19 pandemic, smoking is a major risk factor for serious illness and death when infected.

Great, ban menthol cigarettes for the reasons given, stopping young people becoming smokers (because it is a lot easier to become addicted because it is menthol??).

It will not be a minute before the kids will be dabbing those up-the-nose vapour sticks on normal cigarettes, effectively turning them into menthol tasting cigarettes. Lets see what the damage will be then. And it will happen because an authoritative body has told them (rebellious teenagers) not to do something against their will.

Consulate: "As cool as a mountain stream". In the UK menthol cigs were always regarded as being just for women. No self-respecting bloke would be seen smoking them. Pass me a Woodbine or a Park Drive.

An EU-wide ban on the sale of flavoured cigarettes was introduced in May 2016, including menthol, under the 2014 revised European Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), with a May 2016 deadline for EU countries to transpose the TPD into national law. While retailers were allowed a year to sell stocks of other flavours, the phase-out period for menthol was extended for a further three years, and was due to come into force across the EU in May 2020.

To be more exact, Wednesday, May 20th was the deadline.

The companies have been advising consumers to switch to e-cigarettes if they want menthol flavour.

Based on MY experience most Menthol smokers are Asian or Black, regardless of age. They tried banning Menthols in America, but Al Sharpton of all people fought them and won. Go figure.

It's all about control folks. Slowly everyone's freedoms are being eroded. I am not a smoker, but I do believe in freedom of choice.

When the current emergency measures are relaxed, we will not be able to go back to the old normal. Governments all over the world are intent on controlling more and more of their population. They are quick to take away our freedoms and once taken, they never give them all back to us. That is precisely what is happening now worldwide.

Yup. Future looks bleak if you ask me...

i agree. Banning takes away freedoms of choice. What next? Ban beer because people can get addicted to alcohol.

Don't even go there!

Seems like scientists don't agree – as often – this article from normally reliable and serious source "The Economist" says »Smokers seem less likely than non-smokers to fall ill with covid-19«.

And by the way, menthol was cool to smoke when I was young, and for many years after, right until I quit smoking...????

Not only Thailand (quote from Evening Standard):-

Smokers in the UK will no longer be able to buy menthol cigarettes, as new smoking laws were introduced on May 20.

The new rules have been introduced with the aim to stop young people from taking up smoking.

No worries as clearly says:

It will still be legal to purchase menthol filters and hand-rolling tobacco if they are packaged separately.    ????
