Southern Thailand: Waterspouts appear off Songkhla islands

The Facebook page of the province of Songkhla in southern Thailand showed crowds marvelling at the natural phenomenon of waterspouts.

They appeared by the islands known as Cat and Mouse.

A waterspout is an intense columnar vortex that occurs over a body of water. Some are connected to a cumulus congestus cloud, some to a cumuliform cloud and some to a cumulonimbus cloud. In the common form, it is a non-supercell tornado over water, according to Wikipedia.

Other online information said: Although waterspouts are not as destructive as their land based cousins their ability to carry anything in their path makes them dangerous to vessels and small craft. Not only can waterspouts cause havoc to mariners, they can devastate coral reefs and marine organisms that are close to the water's surface.

No damage was reported by Sanook who said that the Thai colloquial terms for such things are "Elephant trunks".

Who in their right mind wants to stay on a beach with clouds that dark

The same type of people who find huge waves or Tsunamis fascinating, stand and watch it coming !

I would have been a lot more concerned about lightening where those folks are standing. Water spouts are interesting to watch, but it's not save standing on an open beach like that. Obvious lightening rods they are.
