not much to celebrate about.  the country is a mess

Indeed it is.

The country I grew up in and loved is dead.

It had been on life-support for years and finally succumbed to a prolonged breakdown of law and order combined with an outbreak of pestilence that they were unable to contain.

   RIP the First Republic.

The Consulate used to throw parties. I had to attend the 03 event, a social obligation for a former co worker. I assume they had others in the aughts.

When did they stop? Cost cutting or did it get uncivil like the Thanksgiving dinner did decades before?

The op asked for information not for negativity or misguided opinions...

Why would there be any 4th of July celebrations? This weekend incl. monday is a Buddha holiday.

Why would July 4th be worthy of an event?!

Because it's Good Riddance Day, according to my former British co-worker.  :cheesy:
