Chiang Mai: Thai caddy wants half a million baht after foreigner hit her in the eye with a ball

exactly, unless he was deliberately targeting her or proven negligent there is no case to answer - it was an accident and should be covered by her employer - the golf course

golf balls can and do injure people - it's power for the course

He would want to be even better than Tiger Woods to hit a caddy in the eye at a distance.

And she is not much of a caddy if she gets hit by a golf ball on a golf course. Caddies are always supposed to keep an eye out for both their own party and anyone following behind.

  • The golf course should have insurance to cover accidents like this as this was an accident the player should not have to pay and he needs to sue the course to recover his money .

Don't the COVID regulations require her to be wearing a face shield?

I was there the day it happened. This was last winter, before Covid emerged, so 'no' to your question. Word got around the course quickly. Her coworkers, the other caddies, were understandably upset. They're a bunch of housewives or single mothers trying to make ends meet. I have been booking the same caddy for seven years. I consider her to be a friend.

It's really dismaying to see the lack of compassion in these responses, as if every story in Thailand has to be broken down into farang vs. Thai, or the fault must be found. It was an accident. Accidents happen.

Yes, he should have had the insurance, which costs less than US$30/year. Glad he took responsibility.

Heck, worth a shot for her.

I'm wondering where she was standing.

Besides this, any proper gulf course has insurance for their employees I would say.

She should have asked for 1 million baht. Getting blind because of a foreigner isn't worth it.

Half a million Baht is pittance in western countries.

What's the latest Lawrence? Has she recovered OK?

Does the course you frequent do government courses for caddies? Or do they just pick it up as they go.

Another person who won't acknowledge or accept the inherent risks associated with their job.  There are so many like this lady nowadays that whine: " I didn't realise it could be dangerous or injure me".

My wife is a caddy and the course insurance will cover medical fees only and there is a cap on that, she thinks it is about 50k baht. There is no insurance for loss of income, thus the player has paid compensation up front rather than going through the court system, which would be lenghty and no idea of outcome dollar wise. I must admit it seams like a hell of a lot of money for blured vision.

In malaysia and philippines the caddies are insured. The club members also have insurance as part of their membership. Visitors pay insurance as included in the green fee cost.

Does that not happen in thailand?

its usually part of the green fees. Plus caddys are insured. Not sure why this guy had to pay.

No it isn't!!  it varies from course to course and country to country.

That's why any sensible golfer has their own individual worldwide policy !

Amazing she is wearing glasses now. Should have done her job and wear safety glasses or at least the glasses she is wearing now. Negligence in work.

What BS she works at a golf course she gets hit by a ball believe me if it was a tie golfer should be getting zeroTIT

Four?  Most golfers, if they shout anything, shout "fore!"

Sounds exactly the same to me ???? spelt differently that's all.

You've been doing it wrong. You are supposed to yell 'Fore' ????

Half a mil extra after paying for play ?

The amount of times I've overbalanced on a skinfull, I'd have been cleared out by now...

In he U.S. many years ago, I hit the windscreen of a vehicle in the parking lot.  I was responsible and my homeowners insurance covered the cost.  In Thailand I have no homeowners insurance, so I guess I am responsible.

I hope those considering a Thai Elite visa for its golf perks, or the "quality tourists" Thailand really wants, many of whom are likely golfers, do hear about this.

I'd better have my golf insurance? Really? I was thinking of hitting the condo pool when I get home. I'd better check up on my swimming insurance. Or maybe the gym, is that equipment really safe? Where's my gym insurance? Good God, those moto taxis! I should be paid up for even looking at them!

It's pretty much the standard worldwide that golfers are responsible for their shots. Many courses even post signs saying so. Typically it involves breaking windows and such, but it includes injuries as well.

This is soooooooo BS ludicrous. It is a golf course for Christ Sakes and she works at the golf course. Sort of like being at a fire dept and getting wet.

Or getting burned.

Yeah, if you're going to tee off with someone in front of you, best make sure it's a slow fivesome, like Koreans. A good whack in the head would be satisfying for these malingerers. I no longer yell "fore" for these guys -- just "incoming!".

Mmm, nothing I like more than a slow fivesome - but do I need insurance now?

In golf there is a rule all over the word, and that is, " no player, no caddies, no anyone in front of where the ball is intended to go". So what did the caddie did there? Of course the golfer could have miss the target totaly and hit a  caddie on a parallel hole. but then it is not his fawlt, but the owner of the golf course. This is just another example of the wellknown thai greed.

she had her eye on that ball all day.  I bet she's laughing now ,  not a bad day out for just a few minutes of pain.

Happened to me once playing a course in Bangkok with a fellow expat and a couple of Thai Army officers.

Hit an iron off the fairway, great connection, only for the ball to hit a tree, it rebounded back and hit my caddied in the face, blood everywhere.

Asked the two Thai guys for some advice and both said Caddie should of been looking and to pay nothing.

Finished the round(replacement caddie) and the starter approached me as i was about to drive off, could not understand much but got the jist of it and gave him 500 Baht.

Turned out caddie had 2 front teeth knocked out, but that was the last i heard about the incident and been back numerous times.

This is the consequences to play a risk sport.. ????
