Poll shows majority of people disagree with pro-democracy protesters' methods

A recent poll shows that the majority of respondents are not in agreement with how pro-democracy activists are conducting their protests.

 

The Super Poll Research Centre surveyed 1,216 people nationwide from September 25 to October 3 on unacceptable behaviour.

 

When asked what behaviour was unacceptable (multiple choice), 97.6 per cent of respondents mentioned inciting others; 96.1 per cent -- abusing institutions; 95.7 per cent -- repelling others; 94.1 per cent -- slandering others and 93.4 per cent -- using impolite words.

 

Separately, 97.4 per cent of respondents said the protesters' move to defy laws, destroy properties and threaten others was unacceptable, while 2.6 per cent said the protesters' move was acceptable.

 

Meanwhile, 89.9 per cent of respondents said news about political rallies would intensify the economic and Covid-19 crises, while 10.1 per cent said it would not intensify.

 

An overwhelming 89 per cent of respondents said they do not want protesters to threaten others or use violence, while 11.0 per cent wanted them to do so.

 

Lastly, 94.8 per cent of respondents were unsure when the protesters would use violence, while 5.2 per cent did not doubt the protesters' moves.

1,216 people don't sound like a super pole to me.

Never trust a poll that doesn't publish full details.  In this case, there are absolutely NO details published.

 

• Who did the poll?
• Who funded the poll?
• How were people selected?
• How many people were contacted and refused to participate?
• What are the exact questions?
• What is the order of the questions?

 

Then there is a HUGE problem with the questions that were "reported"

That's like asking....

If someone breaks in your home in the future, which of these actions would be unacceptable:

• Stealing your property?
• Raping you?
• Murdering you?

 

Seriously - how is something like that a poll?

 

Most telling of all, this poll was clearly not about anything anyone has either done or is planning to do.  It was all hypothetical about what might happen.  Here's the evidence of that:

Apparently no questions like:

Do you support the protester's call for new elections?

• Yes
• No
• Unsure 
• No Opinion

 

Or maybe there were questions like that, but the responses didn't fit the narrative.  This seems very much like a push poll, where you ask questions to promote a specific narrative.  And you ask questions in such a way that people have no real options in how they answer.

 

How wrong is murder?

• Murder is always wrong
• Murder is ok if you are a really nice person
• Murder is great, everyone should do it

 

So yeah, this poll is basically garbage.

I´m sure the way the questions were put and the selection of the respondents were thoroughly bias.

But

It still shows what the majority of the thai people probably thinks.

Confusian and Buddhist upbringing with respect (submission) to authorities, poor schooling, ignorance of the rest of the world, poverty in great parts of the population make them ripe for an authoritharian governement for the foreseeable future. The great majority doesn´t see them selves as citizens of the country, more like a servant - master relationship to the ruleing class.

A bonanza for authoritarians.

I think that, with one man's passing, even many of the older generation have become a bit disenchanted.

I think the Superpol by Thai visa readers shows that 100% think the poll is <deleted>.

Based on the other polls released by Super Poll Research, I don't necessarily think they are pushing an agenda.

It's just what news has become these days.... eg "what is the most dramatic polling question can we make up this time, that will lead to more clicks and revenue for our publisher ?" Actually, sounds like a fun job.

Most international reporting has the army and elites at a likability disadvantage.  The youth of Thailand see little future and they are right.  When Vietnam does overtake Thailand, that will be the proof and it will be too late.

I must have missed the reports where the pro democracy protesters were destroying property and threatening others.

Maybe the question was about BLM "protesters" in the USA?

This is probably true for the older generations, but, based on some of the comments I've been hearing in my test prep classes recently (students in their early to mid 20s), particularly post lock down, this is not true for the younger generations. They know what's going on and they want change and a "better Thailand". Just recently I had papers from 2 students who both criticized institutes which are untouchable. The days of them being completely subservient might be drawing to an end.

Not only that, the major owner, Chai Bunnag's wife is an MP for the PPRP party as one of the two (along with Singha heiress) who benefited from the highly dubious counting method when another MP in Chiang Mai got orange carded. Obviously being the wife of the owner of NMG and probably previously a shareholder of Nation MG, is not a problem, when compared to Thanathorn owning a disbanded inflight magazine....

 

Still waiting for the EC to rule on the many MP's who also had shares in businesses which listed 'media' as a possible business type.... How long has it taken now?

and you all think the demonstrations are peaceful and non violent.

and you all think the Thais support them.

and you all think these protests are accepted.

I don't think there is any such thing as an unbiased poll in this highly charged, politicized, polarized, sectarian world nowadays.  For the most part, those who control the communication channels control the narrative, polls included.

And the published results of the poll are meant to sway the opinion of those on the fence though implicit peer pressure.

Sonchai the moderate is thinking:
"Humm, I agree with some of the platform the demonstrators offered, but now I see that most Thai people disagree.  Humm, I better not rock the boat.  Time to conform with the majority and denounce the protests!" 

And that's how it's done folks.

This poll is NOT about  touchable Vs Untouchable. 

This poll is about violent method Vs Non-violent method.

Never trust a poll, that is sponsored by a very desperate administration, that is on it's way out of power, sooner or later. They sense the time is coming, and they will do anything within their power to deceive the public. Since they have near control over the media, that is a very easy thing to attempt, though I doubt if they are having much success at it. The reality is that more than likely 95% of the public support the protest movement, despise the army, and want change. The youth will eventually gain the upper hand, and the army will not have the moral backing, like it has had in the past, to wage violence against them. 

 

This poll represents the opposite sentiment of nearly every Thai I speak with, these days. Fake, fake, fake. 

 

The era of the dinosaur is nearly over. Let us hope and pray it happens very soon.
