"Thoroughly rotten family" rob lottery winners - but police recover the loot

Sanook reported on the resolution of a case of theft from a couple in Yasothon in Thailand's north east who won first prize in the state lottery in July.

 

Thong Orn, 54, and his wife Mut, 53, scooped 12 million in the July 16th draw. 

 

But their win made them targets. 

 

A burglary followed in which two bank books, government bonds, cash and land title deeds were stolen. 

 

Then someone withdrew 2,900,000 baht and closed the Krung Thai account belonging to Mut.

 

Police were on the case and soon found a 23 year old electrician called Nisit parked in the area near the burglary. 

 

He had just married 19 year old Sudarat on October 17th. 

 

Nisit first denied involvement in the burglary but a search of his Vigo found Mut's bankbook and Thai ID.

 

Thai Charoen police found out that the ID had been used by his mother Wanphen, 60, to pose as Mut and shut the account and steal all the money. 

 

The cash had been used for a down payment on an Isuzu pick-up, a cash payment of 140,000 to the thieving mother Wanphen, two baht weight of gold and almost 300,000 baht payment to fiancee Sudarat, all part of the wedding dowry.

 

There was also a little over 1.9 million baht in her account.

 

Police managed to recover almost every baht of the stolen money.

 

Sanook also reported from sources that Krung Thai bank had made up the difference accepting responsibility for being duped.

 

Not surprisingly when referring to the son, mother and bride, Sanook called them a "thoroughly rotten family" in their caption.

The same way almost 600,000 baht was taken out of my account in a single morning. Thankfully the bank in question admitted it was an inside job and returned all of the money, but it took almost three months.

How does the couple allow this theft to play out once they realized they were robbed?

all holdings should have been locked immediately...

 

lot of the blame needs to go to the institutions...where are their safety systems once notified that documents cards and books were stolen?

Elsewhere on this website Plod (presumably) leaked the identity of a woman who had reported to them to record the fact that she had won 12M a fortnight ago. 

 

Unless or until this lot (plod/press/gen public) master the art of pers security/privacy/data protection/ public accountability nothing will change.

 

Lottery entrants can minimize the chances of falling foul of the above by;

 

a) Taking a snapshot of their tickets at the point of purchase & saving it to cloud;

 

b  ) NOT reporting to Plod <it isn't a legal requirement>if they get a result (or reaching for the fire crackers lol) &

 

c) Acting as directed on the back of the ticket.

 

(Around 3 years ago we (family) had a modest win on the Thai lottery. The above worked for us ????)

Sorry you have got it the wrong way round. The husband pays it to the wife's family as compensation for her not being able to work on the family farm any more.

Or usually these days, he borrows (rents) it, together with a stack of gold, then gives it back the next day

Dowry is paid by the bride's family to the groom, as in India etc, in Thailand this is reversed and sinsod is paid to the bride's family by the groom.

Pretty much guarantee that that will change soon to the Indian husband paying the wife's family - the sheer amount of preference being shown for male children and females aborted is making wives harder to find. Demand breeds money. Pretty soon in India, poor men will not have a wife.

Not easy to do, they often want 2=3 of mine then scan through the passport a few times
