Activist slams Thai judiciary for refusing bail for pro-democracy fighters, yet letting ‘Sia Po’ out

Apirak Chat-arnon

In a Facebook post, activist Nuttaa Mahattana questioned the court’s decision to grant bail to popular “gambler” Apirak “Sia Po” Chat-arnon, who was arrested for shooting and seriously injuring two people in a Bangkok massage parlour on Wednesday.

Yet, she said, no bail is even being considered for peaceful pro-democracy fighters like human-rights lawyer Arnon Nampa, and student activists Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak and Panusaya “Rung” Sithijirawattanakul.

Previously, Thai netizens also questioned Thailand’s judiciary, when the Constitutional Court decided to only suspend opposition Move Forward MP Thanwarin Sukkhapisit over allegations of being involved in media business, yet let all suspects from the ruling parties go scot free.

Apirak, who was arrested on Thursday over charges of attempted murder and possession of a gun without permission, has been granted temporary release on a Bt350,000 guarantee.

The court apparently went against investigators’ recommendations and decided to let him go just because he had surrendered to police.

Meanwhile, one of the victims said a very rich person had offered them money to drop charges, but they refused because they were almost killed.

The victims are also calling on witnesses to release evidence as Apirak’s friendship with this very rich person may affect the investigation.

Inequality and they belong to the wrong side unfortunately.  Democracy here is a farce.

Yep, attempted murder or GBH at the very, very least bailed, peaceful protester not so much, seems fair...

Yep nothing at all dodgy about that, I guess it's all part of Pinochio's bringing happiness to the people, well some of the people, you know the good people...

Would love somebody to check bank accounts for deposits about the time that was decided, yep nothing at all dodgy with that...

Anyone want to bet if  said very rich person receives any form of penalty for trying to pervert the course of justice, nope didn't think so...

Blatant corruption for everyone to see, no shame, no honour and absolutely no chance of any punishment. Anywhere else you may be forgiven for thinking this is fiction, unfortunately with Thailand it's just another day of demonstrating the hi-so's contempt for the law and people of Thailand, then again it is demonstrated from the top down on a daily basis, scum pure and simple...

And what about that hiso copper who hit a killed a food vendor in his car and literally ran away? (Where’s that story by the way?)

He was given bail for 100k. And yea, if anyone’s wondering, that’s what the American who wrote very mean reviews about a hotel had to pay. Not before he spent two days in jail, of course.

Would anyone like to remind others how they should respect Thai law?

When do we get the 'slam' then?

Yep quite a few farrang hypocrites on this site, they want to be Thai so much they willingly swallow the lies and corruption and regularly drop their trousers and bend over, you really couldn't make it up yet there are pages of apologists making excuses for a broken Thai judiciary and Police......

For the young people who just want to be free. Let them out.

Even before they have been put on trial, the young activists have had forced haircuts. The males got short high and tights like police officers and the girl Rung who had colored hair had it dyed a natural dark brown color and cut to a short cut just below the ears. It's sickening.

Whispers say people up high don't want the leaders out so they will either remain behind bards or be released and then arrested again on the spot. Democracy activists are perceived as a danger to the folks up high...

Disgraceful behaviour from the authorities.  I do wonder what they do when one has a natural hair colour other than black. I heard of teachers insisting all pupils must have black hair, even if that means a kid with non black hair is then forced to dye the hair... I would fear some of these same folks run prisons. Teachers and prison guards have much in common I think.

The activists threaten the establishment.

The shooting gambler with the rich friend epitomizes the establishment.

Therefore Thai Justice is dispensed by the courts.

sickening  country to often for me.

I think this is an example of an oxymoron.

In my opinion,  what is going on in Thailand is akin to the "War of the Roses" back in UK history (yellow instead of white):-

I spelt "tiers" as in a two tier judicial system" but thank you for your correction.... save it for another day.

Sense of humour failure, perhaps?

I just read online that Penguin's mother has lost her job because 'her son isn't loyal'. There's a lot of news out there on this that is not getting coverage. It's depressing to see this going on and so many people totally apathetic to the abuse of human rights or ignorant of what is happening.

I have read elsewhere that the three most prominent protest leaders have been released from custody by the courts, and have been admitted to hospital in a somewhat battered state. They are reported to be suffering from sleep deprivation, severe dehydration, bruising and in one case wounds caused by broken glass! At least one is on a drip. Despite the court releasing them, and the opposition of the hospital authorities a variety of "plain clothes policemen" are trying to re-arrest them, no doubt for some more energetic bouts of questioning.
