BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MNRE) has since June, been receiving a lot of plastic waste, as part of the Plastics to Merits campaign. Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University today donated some 100,000 plastic bottle caps collected by students and university staff to the campaign for recycling.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment’s (MNRE) Permanent Secretary Jatuporn Buruspat has received a 209-kilogram pack of some 100,000 plastic bottle caps collected under Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University’s environmental protection campaign, which is a network partner of the Plastics to Merits recycling campaign.

These plastic caps will be recycled and upcycled into materials for the production of other items, such as monk’s robes, medical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and other instruments for marine animal rescue.

The MNRE’s Permanent Secretary said plastic bottle caps are in the top-10 of most commonly found ocean trash, at about 26 billion caps or 520 tons in weight. Unless handled properly, these bottle caps cab affect the land and marine environment, sea animals, as well as humans.

The MNRE’s Plastics to Merits recycling campaign encourages the general public to discard their single-use plastic items, such as water bottles, cups, straws, and plastic bags at collection points located at Provincial Halls, Provincial Natural Resources and the Environment Offices, and through campaign partners.

Items collected in the campaign will be recycled and upcycled to make the most out of these materials, preventing them from ending up as garbage, and help save sea animals.

This campaign also helps encourage the circular economy, and promotes correct ways of managing plastic waste, as well as the reduction of plastic usage.

You just know the rest of the bottle went in the sea or out the car window

It's so annoying the amount of garbage just tossed on the side of the road.  But there is an explaination.  It's been discovered people on low incomes with low self esteem with little hope for a better future just don't care about the environment.  So, that would apply to not only Thailand but neighbouring countries as well.  Lifting people out of poverty should be the aim of regional governments.

I watched a neighbour the other day walk out of his home past a wheelie bin and throw a bottle into the hedge, as he turned he saw me, shrugged his shoulders and grinned.

Never going to change. So what is the plastic bottle caps are made into other plastic things...that's only delayed it's eventual throw away time.

Government need to ban plastic for use as food and drink packaging and also for kids toys, decoration and household utensils . Then use biodegradable alternatives instead.

Sad but true ...

I remember one day in the south of France . I drove just behind an expensive BMW convertible . It had the kids on the back seats  and they just threw their empty Coca Cola cans out of the driving car ... right into the beautiful nature .

It is not only about being rich or not , it is about education .

People need to learn that polluting the environment is disgusting and selfish .

If they do not want to learn , fines will teach them ...
