Yesterday given quote of 14,000 baht at a High Street clinic for root canal, post and crown. Thai Mrs went ballistic and wants me to have an extraction. Any members with experience of this? Is the quote reasonable? Could the dentist's at our local hospital perform this work? Thanks in advance.

Seems quite reasonable, and expect it is not the high grade gold which would have really caused a scene (crown only could easily be more than 20k).  ????

This is often used as a reference for price range at high street clinics:

https://www.bangkoksmiledental.com/prices.php#prices_prosthetics

Suspect hospital dentists could do the work - crown may have to be ordered from outside so probably not too much cost savings on that but have no real world knowledge.  I use a hospital but it is a very expensive dental service at private facility here in Bangkok and expect you are asking about a government type facility.

Most helpful, thank you very much!

Seems to be the normal price.

Typical Thai thinking not to spend "so much of your own money" on something that has to be done.

The crowns are usually made somewhere else and all need to make some money.

Next time you'd just go and get the next one extracted?

Certainly don't want any extractions if can be avoided. Maybe have to put up with it until can go back to U.K. without restrictions. You're correct about the thinking of course. Mrs would never buy new tyres for her car (for example).

As some others have said it seems very reasonable. I just paid 18,000 baht for a ceramic crown to replace a crown that broke.  Done at Smile Dental. I am sure I could of gone some where else for cheaper but have always had good service here

the dental work sounds quite reasonable. and some of the decision might depend on which tooth, but it is up to you... you might have the new tooth longer than the wife...

she can elect not to get new tires for her car but cannot tell you not to get them for your car...

That's a reasonable price. However it might not last forever and sooner or later the tooth must be extracted anyway. My friend got it done the second time 3 years ago by a very expensive specialist in Berlin, and now the tooth is gone anyway.

I paid 15k for same about a year ago.. Many Thais don't like to pay for dentistry.. would rather chew on their gums and buy gold..

I recently went through the full procedure and it cost me 43k baht. The composite crown was 19k alone. Very modern clinic in Sathorn area of Bangkok with English speaking Dr's who studied dentistry in the US. Not the cheapest, but I wasn't prepared to take any chances.

Yes I have had a bad experience with this. I was quoted 6000 for a root canal....I had asked for an extraction but the dentist said no need. Well it wound up costing more than 30,000, what with root planing, filling with bone powder (which fell straight out and cost 10,000). Months after the procedure my tooth was still painful.

A friend recommended a clinic in Pattaya. The dentist took a panorex and said the tooth needed to come out as there was very little bone there (1000 baht), he recommended an extraction (10,000 baht). I then got a 'dry socket' which was painful and cost another 1000 in consultation fees. To be fair the Pattaya clinic was excellent....new clean equipment and perfect English. The dry socket was just bad luck.

Thai Mrs thinks you should be spending it on her. I’d be extracting Thai Mrs not my tooth.

Explain to the Mrs., that her chief job is to have your back, and always have your welfare and health in mind. Ignore her ignorance. It is a very fair price. And you only extract a tooth, when there are no other options!

I had a root canal and crown in Bangkok around Asoke area. Total cost was over 30k. I’m a difficult patient but I was very happy with the service... but not the cost!

I would say it's reasonable. Make sure that it's a good quality dental clinic, it's a serious bit of work.

I had one done last year at the Dental Hospital Soi 77 (used to be on Soi 49), which I have used for many years.

The total work there was about 22K.

xtracted but theAgree and will do! Last extraction I had not too long ago (in U.K.) was barbaric. Took so long wrenching that the dentist told me to go back and sit in the waiting room whilst we both recovered enough to continue.

I also had an extraction of front tooth which took 1 hour , done in Thai Gov hospital . I was supposed to have 2 extracted but I cancelled the second after the 1 hour torture . Work carried out by very young lady and I think I was being practised on . 3 days later an adjacent good tooth fell out whilst eating cos it had been disturbed by the first extraction. The so called dentist also made a tear in my inner mouth which led to an infection and so after I had to take antibiotics .

Now in a quandary to where to go for further treatment as I am a scaredy cat concerning dental work . Can anyone recommend a good dentist in the north east Thailand or even Bangkok ? Further extractions and / or bridge / implants needed.

Why do plenty of foreigners have rotten teeth?

It's not better to spend your money on booze, chicks and fags.

The third teeth brigade will understand me well.

Where in the northeast? It's 33 % of this country.

I have recently gone through this procedure, at a private clinic in Pattaya that was recommended to me. In short, the tooth supporting a crown cracked and broke off. The original crown was done in UK about 20 years ago.

The choices offered were,

extraction and an implant, about 50,000

root treatment and post crown, about 30,000

extraction and a bridge, price not discussed as I rejected that idea! I already have a mouthfull, it took two years to become unaware of them!

The dentist was insistent that the implant was the way to go, but I know a few people who have had problems with them, and I know way too much about medical matters to go down that road!

I had the post crown, not too painfully, and final bill was 28,000. First class job, modern and clean clinic, efficient and competent staff, but a bit impersonal.

There is no doubt that the primary sales pitch was, implant, implant, implant, and the only reading matter in English in the waiting room was a heap of implant manufacturers' brochures, with all the technical data! and there was disappointment that I did not bite, if you will forgive the pun! I would still recommend this dentist, though. PM if you want details.

The Ms. had a wisdom tooth extracted in Issan which the dentist said needed to go.

It took only a few minutes and I was more concerned than she was.

Afterwards when I asked,  she said it didn't hurt at all.

Superal, did you ask for and get a shot of novocain?     I understand many are fearful of shots from dentists.
