WIN laptop screen connection to TV. Work around?

Recommended Posts

Posted

A while back I bought this ACER 2 in 1 laptop computer. Although it's a piece of junk and should be used as a boat anchor, I'm persisting with it.

It had origional Win 10 installed, and the computer display won't duplicate or connect to my TV.

It seems for an extra sum of money ($160 odd) this Window 10 OS can be upgraded to include remote desktop operation. I'm just wondering if the duplicate display feature is something else that may not be installed and is installed with an upgrade like the remote desktop option.

Is there a great 3rd party option program to display my laptop screen on my TV as I'm not going to upgrade the boat anchor.

Have you tried using cables (VGA or HDMI)?

Yes I am using a HDMI cable from my computer to TV. When I connect the cable HDMI 1 slot comes up an the TV screen but says 'no signal'.

Suspect you have to activate what to send there with settings in video display software - is there a link on right side of menu bar along with sounds/time etc?

You can try to use chromecast - this will work well if your ACER 2 in 1 is a chromebook and should work on all laptops - I use it with my laptop and iPhone:

https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/3289520?hl=en&ref_topic=2594165

Before you set up

For Chromecast to work on your Chromebook, you'll need:

Set up Chromecast with your Chromebook

  1. Turn on your TV.
  2. Plug in your Chromecast. Learn how to plug your Chromecast in to your TV.
  3. Using the Input or Source button on your TV remote, change the input on your TV until you see the Chromecast home screen.
  4. On your Chromebook, sign in to your account.
  5. Follow the steps that show on your TV. Learn how to set up Chromecast.

Thanks, Chromecast works, but I want to get away from the WiFi and use the cable from computer output to TV input.

it should be in the system settings on the display settings. image.png.107a3e0d792b3fd0ca1a908213ddbb51.png

I can find the 3 options in the System  Display settings for connecting to the TV, but non connect.  That's why I think there needs to be an Win upgrade to make it work.

The links in Display don't seem to cause anything to happen and TV says    no signal.

Whilst checking, type troubleshooting in the menu bar at the bottom.

Click on Troubleshooting tab.

Click on view all option on the upper left corner.

Select the Hardware and Device option from the list.

Click Next to run the Hardware and Device Troubleshooter.

This should show any errors and auto apply any corrections

If that fails, try searching for a windows update

Click windows update tab and update if available.

If you have an Intel system, its a little bit easier. I have an old Dell 2 in 1 and all you need to do is right click on the desktop screen and click Graphics Properties (there will be an intel logo next to it)

Intel HD graphics Control Panel will then open, giving you a range of options - I'll just boot up my old laptop to see what they are.

I think I've found the problem.

I think I'm using the wrong output port on my laptop.

I think I should be using the end output connection not the middle one.

If you click Options and Support, then click on the small downwards facing arrow top left screen, 4 sub options open. Click support and download the latest Intel Graphics Driver. This should refresh your system, or update it and may start working again.

Option 2

Remove the HDMI cable from laptop. Click on Display. Then insert the HDMI cable. This forces the GPU to check for a signal

I couldn't read the writing till I took a pic and blew it up. The end connector says HDMI.

I'll have to buy a new adapter tomorrow.

You shouldn't need an adapter - HDMI to HDMI is perfect. Remove the adapter box and plug the HDMI cable directly into the HDMI slot. Make sure the other end of the cable is in an HDMI slot in the TV.... should be auto and good to go.

The TV has large HDMI ports and the laptop has a mini HDMI port.

So HDMI to mini HDMI or am I getting the terminology wrong?

When you get the 'No signal' message displayed on your TV, just pull out the HDMI connector from your laptop and insert it again.  This works for me.

But the photo shows a micro USB to HDMI adaptor?

Won't work with a laptop - they are made for phones and tablets. If it's a USB-C cable, then it would work.

Why didn't the other slot (The middle one) work? Is it because it doesn't output HDMI signals?

The middle slot is a USB slot - Yes, it won't work with HDMI

No worries, I work online so i'm always on the computer anyway! Happy to help. Good luck getting the cable, you can also find them in Big C, some larger Tesco Lotus shops and most large phone stalls will have a plethora of cables if you wanted to try and get it today. I think most advice shops (the blue and white ones) close at 7pm

Ok, why make a USB to HDMI adapter if it won't work?

Change the size of the screen resolution.in display. You will have to try different ones. Remember the one you had.worked on mine...
