PM Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday ordered a military operation to patrol Thailand’s borders, following an outbreak of Covid-19 linked to illegal migrants from Myanmar.

The order came after Wednesday’s meeting of the Defence Council, which was chaired by Prayut in his capacity as defence minister

The PM ordered military personnel to help in patrol the border and prevent entry of illegal migrant workers both by land and sea, said Defence spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich.

He also ordered the police to set up a special committee to investigate corrupt officials at all levels involved in the smuggling of migrant workers into the country.

Meanwhile police and soldiers were ordered to set up checkpoints on known migrant-trafficking routes to protect at-risk border provinces.

The Army and Navy were also ordered to deploy personnel and medical equipment to establish a 1,000-bed field hospital in Samut Sakhon, where the latest has spawned more than 1,200 cases. The military is currently seeking a suitable factory or residential building to house the hospital close to the outbreak’s epicentre in order to contain the spread of the disease.

Those numbers do not add up to what they reported today on the news report. Are they not listing the new migrant workers covid cases?

All the numbers from Samut Sakhon were omitted from today's figures.

Must be bad.

I wonder how far that will get?

If you set up checkpoints on known trafficking routes, the traffickers will not use those routes.

Any operation to close the border needs to be covert, intelligence led and operate 24 hours a day.

Unfortunately the operation is likely to be overt, comfort driven, and daylight only...

So let me get this straight. There have been issues with people coming across the border for a long time and NOW he's getting the military involved?

Just what does the military do in this country anyway?

Pathetic...

They are a bit late aren't they . they should've done that from day Dot to keep the border closed and to keep watch on All the officials at the border crossings . Then maybe the  corrupt ones would be in jail now.

Stupid me, thinking this was already happening. Heat seeking cameras in helicopters anyone? Nah thought not. So a few days/meetings to work out how they will do it, then how long to get the troops there, Jees our supreme leader, stop going for smug train rides and get your act together. PATHETIC!

There are some top RTP ranks losing serious sleep. Heads are going to roll on this one.

You mean they will be sidelined into an inactive post for a while until the 'heat has died down' and moved on.

All that would have achieved would be another layer to share in the payouts!

The foxes have been ordered to investigate breakins at the chicken shed.
