Thailand warns of stricter measures if virus not contained

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand warned on Tuesday that more intensive measures might be necessary to halt its worst coronavirus outbreak yet and urged the public to cooperate to contain a spread that has seen cases in most regions of the country.

Thailand has imposed tighter control measures in some areas, including on entertainment businesses, which will be reassessed in seven days, said COVID-19 taskforce spokesman Taweesin Wisanuyothin.

Health authorities confirmed 155 new cases on Tuesday as new clusters emerged in the wake of a big outbreak discovered 12 days ago at a seafood market near Bangkok, among mainly migrant workers from Myanmar.

Though low in comparison to many countries, Thailand's average of 142 new daily cases is a setback for its efforts to keep the virus at bay, having recorded just 6,440 infections and 61 deaths since its first case in January.

"If the situation is under control, we will continue the current measures. If not, we will review them all. So we need to help each other more," Taweesin said, urging people to stay home.

The latest curbs announced on Monday include a ban in Bangkok on betting businesses and midnight closures for its bars, nightclubs and music venues until Jan. 4.

Keeping new cases under 1,000 a day may need more aggressive restrictions as imposed earlier in the year to fight the first outbreak, Taweesin said.

Those measures, which included closures of malls, restaurants and entertainment areas and restrictions on international travel, caused the tourism-reliant economy to contract the most in 22 years in the second quarter.

On Tuesday, the cabinet agreed to allow illegal migrants from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar to register to work in Thailand for two years and also approved a budget of about 11 billion baht ($366.30 million) for combating the new outbreak.

Rather than start a new topic, I'm wondering if there has been any news about whether Thailand now has U.K. variant and whether it's become dominant. There was talk for weeks now about a faster spreading but not more lethal variant coming in from Myanmar. Is that the same as the U.K. variant? I'm sure I'm not the first to notice that not only is the Thailand covid-19 lucky honeymoon over but it's seems to be spreading very quickly relative to the earlier stage outbreaks.

I don't know about Thailand but they found 1 in Queensland a South African strain

which should be even more faster spreading then the UK one but fortunately that

person is in quarantine

Stricter measures for a 'pandemic' which happened to be just a flue? Locking up the people gives far more damage and deads.

In Thailand 65 people die every day in traffic, but nobody cares at all.....and for the flue they will lockdown the whole country?

And what about the TB cases and Rabies both preventable yet many dogs are running loose everywhere and TB is very high in Thailand.

What a ridiculous assertion. If what you were saying was accurate (which it is not), hospitals and ICUs would routinely run out of beds every flu season. That is clearly not the case.

Ignore the idiot.

Don't feed the troll.

Like his hero (no doubt) he is a self deluding fool.

For both cases , i do not know anywhere in the world where any hospital is full with TB or Rabies cases . If you get bitten by a stray dog you should get a vaccine for rabies , since it is 100% deadly ( well there is 1 known case of a girl who has survived it ) .

TB strangely enough was almost out of this world, thamks to vaccination . They only forgot some prisons in the gulag in Russia , so it got out there and since then is back slowly on the rise . It is however treatable as far as i remember .

Stop writing complete rubbish, nothing to do with the traffic accidents

And it is not a flue, it is a flu. A very dangerous one, as is instanced worldwide.

Ah! Covid is just the flu. Haven't heard that one for a while. Maybe you get it, get sick and you can tell us if it's just like the flu. Personally all the people I have seen talking about their experience being infected with this and how horrible it is and the medico's and scientists who talk about possible long term damage are all lying. Bye the way if someone dies in a traffic accident it doesn't mean there is a possibility of me dying. If I come into contact with a covid infected person there is.

If you come into contact with an infected person there is a chance you could die, if you catch it,  BUT it is extremely small. Assuming you are in good health and not over 85 it is 0.02%. You have a far higher chance of dying crossing the road, especially in Thailand, you need to get thing into perspective!

It's faster spreading but no one seems to know yet if the new vaccines will be effective against it. I sure hope so.
