What Snake Is This?

Featured Replies

Found this baby snake on our doorstep this morning (assuming the cat found it), and are wondering is anyone can identify it?

For reference, it's roughly 4-4.5" long and little less than 1/4" diameter at its largest point.

Just wondering what to expect when we run across mom! :o

Looks like a reticulated python. A baby python that is.... Yummy!

Well, the cat didn't think it was too yummy seeing as he left it for the ants. Not too often he leaves a kill :o

This snake is far too small, and has the wrong colours for a reticulated python. Most hatchlings are a minimum of 35cms and can measure up to 60cms.

Apart from that, it is very difficult to identify from these photos. It is similar to a baby Russels Viper or Malayan Pit Viper, but probably too small. Hatchlings are generally over 20cms/12cms respectively. It is unlikely to be either.

Many snakes' juvenile colouring changes considerably when they mature, so identification of a juvenile is often very difficult.

On another tack. I caught this beautiful Sunbeam snake this morning:

Note the beautiful iridescence of the scales. This may well be one of the most beautiful snakes on the earth. Totally harmless to humans, they spend 90% of their life underground. They are constrictors, living on mice, lizards, frogs and birds.

If you find a snake, please don't kill it. Leave it alone and it will go away of its own accord, keeping true vermin down near your home while it is nearby.

Otherwise, if you are desperate, call me, Ta22 or the snake farm to come and catch it for you.

That sunbeam snake looks gorgeous. The one to identify looks a lot like the baby cobras we had. absolutely gorgeous little things, but capable of killing a child. They had to go. Mama is still around though :o

Sorry, went back to look at your snake in close up and it obviously ISN'T a cobra. Too small and no hood. Sorry

your cat muay thai with a snake? not bad. keep your cat away for a while in case the mum of the snake wants to muay thai back. :o

It's a Monty Python.

It's a Monty Python.

You've been saving that one up haven't you? Just waiting for the right time to use it.

:o

CB

Actually I improvised.

More seriously, could this snake be a Tiger Python ?

No, a Tiger Python is one of the morphs of a reticulated python. The hatchlings are far larger, as I explained above.
