Your personal experience seems to be the opposite of mine and most of the other posts.

Do you have any Thai mates?

Of course they are opposite.

I wouldn't call them mates, wives of expat friends, and one Thai male who I have had drinks with whenever I see him, very well educated, and I could say this, you would probably call him a Thai basher, why because he gives his views on Thai's as he sees and understands them as a Thai, my wife has also given me her views on Thai's as she is also Thai.

The Thai guy had studied and also lived overseas for a while, my wife lived in with me for 9 years overseas and both have said, that if they didn't leave Thailand, they wouldn't see their own for what they are, now that's a big statement, i.e. accepting it for what it is.

I know and am aware of the saying that you can't judge everyone based on the experiences of a few alone, I also don't speak the lingo, but I can say that I do judge the ones I see based on their actions, no doubt there are rotten apples in every culture, but regardless of what you think, I believe Thai's (not all) to be racist in my opinion, you just won't hear them say it to your face, like you won't here any other cultures say that they are racist as well, now this could be through lack of education, I don't know, but I do also sense the racism here at times, call me paranoid if you like.

No issues with Thai's, enjoy living here, but I do call a spade a spade, and am respectful, however blind to what goes on around me, I am not, and that is not to say that Thai's are not generous, I just haven't had that generosity shown to me yet, that's all.

Ran out if fuel in new car (showed 70 km until empty) asked at welding shop about getting fuel.. they went hot fuek and put

in tank.. wouldn’t accept small token of money for their kindness..

Could write a msny stories the kindness of Thai .. I’ve lived here

in NE 5 years this month and met many people who were kind as

we all should try to be.... it’s a good place to retire ou here innthe sticks,...

Perhaps I can turn this into a farang-bashing thread, in my ten years here I seem to have encountered more unpleasantness in that quarter.

My posts about Thai road behaviour and their poor mentality are well documented here, but in the 15 years I have been here, I have had no complaints about their workmanship ie, work around my house, to my computer, car, motorbike. etc.

I have always found the vast majority of Thais decent, trustworthy, and honest.

I believe generosity is often shown in order to either gain face or some kind of future karma.

You can see this most prominently at temples.

About the only people who truly expect absolutely nothing in return are happy drunks, everyone else is usually expecting some sort of later help, be it you, Buddha or some other deity...

Once upon a time, I got stuck in no man's land between Malaysia and Thailand. Neither country would let me in. My excuse is that it is a stupid place to have a duty free liquor shop ????  I believe I was there for about 3/4 days and was probably stinking and looking like I felt. All I had was the clothes on my back and passport. Some Thais lent me some money to get to Bangkok and I bought a bottle of whisky with it in Haad Yai. I went downhill from there, if possible, and got put up in some construction workers' tin hut. I was given more cash for the bus back to Bangkok. This is just one of many situations I had when I was an active alcoholic and demonstrates the  compassion that Thais have for others, especially the sick; in Scotland, people would have spat on me. I have tried to repay the countless acts of compassion by, among other things, helping alkies recover.

Maybe we have different understandings of the term “making merit” ?

Maybe we meet different types of people. That's why I asked where you live.

Giving a few fruits is being generous?

For funerals there is usually a village fund in to which every family pays so that with a death there is money available to the bereaved to put on a decent 3 day funeral and party if they can't afford it. I was baffled as to how these bereaved with little money paid for these festivities and  donate to the temple for the cremation. My wife explained. I won't go in to the other fund raising "activities" that go on AT these funeral parties in the sticks.

Where I live in rural Kamphaeng Phet they do the same thing.

Strangely enough I am also included in the fund though I pay a bit more. It will make it a bit easier on my wife and family when I finally pop my clogs.
