829 new cases, most from intensive testing in Samut Sakhon

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Sunday reported 829 new cases, including seven overseas travellers in quarantine.

 

Of the new cases, 91 were exposed to the virus while visiting high-risk areas. The province with the highest number of infections was Samut Sakhon (79), followed by Bangkok (6).

 

 

Proactive testing led to the discovery of 731 cases, mostly in Samut Sakhon where 680 foreigners and 42 Thai workers tested positive. The large number from Samut Sakhon was a result of intensive local testing for six consecutive days.

 

Of the overseas travellers, two Thai nationals had returned from Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, two from Ireland and one from the United Kingdom. An American student and an Egyptian pilot, who flew in from their respective nations, also tested positive.

 

Meanwhile, 110 patients have recovered and been discharged.

 

As of Sunday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 18,782. Of these, 16,323 contracted the virus domestically, including 9,284 who were found via proactive testing, and 2,459 are returnees. So far, 11,615 have recovered and been discharged, 7,090 patients are still in hospital and the 77 have died.

 

According to Worldometer, as of 10am on Sunday, the number of confirmed cases globally had increased to 103.14 million (increasing by 501,099), 74.75 million have recovered, 26.14 million are active cases (108,361 in severe condition) and 2.23 million have died (up by 12,638).

 

Thailand ranks 120th on the global list of most cases. The US tops the list with 26.66 million, followed by India 10.74 million, Brazil 9.17 million, Russia 3.83 million and the United Kingdom 3.8 million.

 

CCSA assistant spokeswoman Dr Panprapa Yongtrakul said a report from AiMask, mask detection technology, around 2.59 per cent of people in Bangkok didn’t wear mask properly or didn’t wear at all in the morning and 3.02 per cent after work hours.

 

During January 21-27, 97.53 per cent of Bangkokians in 15 district wore masks correctly, 1.42 per cent wore it wrongly, and 1.05 per cent didn’t wear a mask.

A brave journalist should venture into Samut Sakhon and report on the condition on the ground.

From the early leaked videos from Wuhan, with numbers this high, large number of people will be shivering away with fever.

Sorry but right now they are in 116th spot on Worldometers site all the way up from best at 152nd just shows what actually testing can do .

I am glad to see that the Thailand strain of Covid is so well behaved. It is happy to stay in one area and prefers to infect migrant workers only.

Don't think 99,000 cases and under 5,000 deaths in China is believable either. Also don't think many of this hosts figures would stack up to the slightest outside scrutiny ????

is that the end of the "proactive testing" ? A more dilligent person than me would look back and find the number they said they would do, but I think it was 60 000. Rather than lifting restrictions I would think that nearly 10, 000 from 60 000 was cause for some concern, but I suppose I'm not affected by the need to reopen for Chinese New Year .

Again no mention of number of tests so its impossible to gauge the positive case percentage which is an essential piece of information. Added to that CCSA stated yesterday that they are no longer carrying out mass pcr testing and instead testing with rapid antibody tests, pcr tests then only to be used on any follow ups who showed positive.

Given the case trend over the last week, more widespread and volume testing is probably a better idea than reducing testing...

There is a mountain of evidence (from Chinese in China and others) that China has been dramatically underreporting from the beginning. 

 

Best estimates are that many millions have died already and 10s of millions have been infected. 

 

Nothing China says can be believed.

Air pollution in Samut Sakhon is some of highest in Thailand so I'm surprised more of these cases are not showing symptoms. As noted the more they test the more they will find. Coinsidentify along with the testing begins the big push to vaccinate.

Antibody testing only good to see how many have had the virus, not who has it now and could be infectious.

Absolutely, its just not fit for purpose. Antibody tests are not deigned for discovering new infections, never have been, too unreliable. BUT cheap hence why they are now being used. Because they give very unreliable results they will get the numbers down on paper. All part of the plan?

Given the number of positive cases that have been found, which is in line with what was expected, I would say it has already been contained. Otherwise we would have seen many more cases popping outside of the  controlled area.

 

What this does reveal though is how far the virus can spread within a community before being detected. There was speculation on TVF early last year that Thailand had already experienced an undetected 'first wave' of Covid brought in by Chinese tourists coming here before the virus had been formally recognized.

 

This incident does show that it could have happened and thereby creating a limited degree of immunity in the Thai population.

Sorry to burst their bubble, but you’re not getting 500 - 900 per day from an area and have it actually contained. 
 

If they did the same amount of testing elsewhere, they would find large numbers as well.

5 days ago CCSA also said the first week of Feb would see Samut Sakhon downgraded to a yellow area. Looks like the plan is falling apart.

No mention of genome testing either to see what strains are involved and how worried everyone should be.

Why is there so little PCR testing in the major cities at least? Why has Chinese New Year not been shut down rather than encouraged?

I think I'd agree with you on that, a couple of friends in Thailand recently said they not well,fever for a couple of days, not feeling great, one of them a cough, but didn't go for testing or doctor, just stayed home for a few days till started feeling better. Both younger people so could easily have been covid not affecting them seriously. You don't test you never know.

Why has this not been done, and why are they dragging their feet in testing all of Samut Sakhon, as well as starting to test the surround portions of Bangkok.  I guess it is all under control...

Anyone who tests positive, regardless of their symptom status, gets thrown in one of the internment camps......which is what the field "hospitals" really are.

 

So the more self aware of their infection (if they start to show symptoms, regardless of how serious) the more likely Thai people are to avoid engaging with the state.

 

Thus the thinly subscribed lottery, that is the Thai testing "campaign", leaves many potentially serious, and likely fatal, cases comfortably out of the statistics.

 

They stay at home and cruise or struggle through it......or die.

 

All that matters for the regime is that it can regularly pop-up a glove puppet to declare that the "hospitals" are "curing" patients (even though the vast majority of infected individuals are in no danger whatsoever) by the shedload.

 

In the UK the "huge toll" has resulted in about an extra 1 in every 550 people dying, about 90% of them over 60.

 

If an extra 1 in every 550 people (preponderantly the elderly....most likely to die anyway) had died over the last year, in Thailand, with the level of state and self censorship that is so characteristic of it and other societies in the region, with the punishments meeted out for "upsetting the general happiness and harmony of the nation" ......who would know?
