Corrupt probation department woman given 261 years 348 months for stealing addicts' bail money

3pm.jpg

A court has sentenced a former employee of the Department of Probation to 261 years 348 months for stealing 1.89 million baht in bail money.

The sentence was reduced to the maximum allowed for such offences, namely 50 years and she was ordered to repay all the money.

The woman - named only as Nang ส (S) was convicted last March after the case was brought by the Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission.

The woman kept bail money from drug suspects who were allowed to be released on condition they enter rehab.

She was supposed to put it in an official bank account but instead she kept it for herself and tried to hide its provenance and say it was her own money.

She was given 5 years each on 87 counts though each of these was reduced by a third to 3 years and four months, hence the long and strangely worded sentence.

Naew Na did not give the age of the woman.

  • Now they need to round up the other million corrupt officials and lock them all up for 50 years...

  • So the woman named as Nang, just merrily carried on pocketing bail money, and nobody  noticed. Strange that 1 woman could do this and there were no checks in place. So was somebody higher up

  • And with good behavior, pity considerations and promise not to do it again she be eligible for parole next year...

So someone higher up the chain can embezzle it, and get away with it.

Nang is going to get her  own bench seat

... quite likely.

Anyway, good to see harsh penalities - for those who are caught.

I presume that both a lack of proper systems and regular auditing are in play here.

If you want to stamp out corruption then start at the Airports

Seems rarely a day goes by without us hearing of corruption here, there and everywhere. It's got to the point where you almost feel sorry for the few unfortunate ones who go to jail, when you know there are tens of thousands way more dishonest still going about their nasty business. Serious fail for Prayut who promised us he was going to stop it all of course.

Strange that 1 woman could do this and there were no checks in place.

So was somebody higher up the pecking order getting a cut?

It's a deeply imbedded cultural thing, don't worry yourself too much about it! :jap:

Didn't cut the higher ups in I bet so was thrown to the dogs.

They have to throw a few that way so it looks like they're doing something to smoke screen the extent of the the problem.

Even the police are begging for money now the brown envelopes have dried up. Getting behind on their condo and car payments no doubt,

Can they seize her assets, as "proceeds of crime"?

In 2017 he also said the Thai-China high-speed railway would be 'up and running Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima by 2021'

He's probably just been kissing too many toads again, giving him disillusions of adequacy.

they will probably grab her assets  more when she is inside

Come on, give the man a break. He promised to stamp out corruption within 20 years. He's only been in power for 7 years. That means he's still got 13 years left.

Corruption is going to dissipate like a morning mist in 2033 and 2034 and be eradicated forever. You'll see.

To be fair you could stick a pin in the map anywhere and say....let's start here.

Why not divide the 348 months by 12, and add the 29 years to the the 261 years for a total of 290 years?

Did Somchai fail math?

Just asking?

Maybe she’ll make bail.

If I was her and no chance of parole on 261 years, I'd agree to pay it all back with 10% interest on release in January 2282

Maybe they could convert all the empty condo units into holding pens... they gonna need a lot of rooms!

I will pay the money back when l get out of jail in 261 years by the way how to drug addicts come up with 1.89million baht bail money thats funny, and all the Government officials and high ranking military skimming, stealing, bribing, fining taking there big fat brown envelopes and untouchable, welcome to Thailand

Archaic justice system. Get less for rape or murder than stealing money. Get nothing for allowing people in across the borders during a pandemic.

A good lesson to learn for some: never steal money that suppose to be deposited to "government account".

Yep, and the immigration, and the Government, and the Army, etc, etc

Parole with probation?

Not to condone her actions or anything, but it's quite ridiculous how the sentences run consecutively here.
