Ceremonies were held yesterday to mark the one year anniversary of Thailand's worst ever mass shooting - the rampage and murder spree of a Thai soldier that ended with the Terminal 21 shootings in downtown Nakhon Ratchasima.

Yesterday relatives and many others gathered at Wat Pa Sattha Ruam where eight cilvilians and a police officer were killed on February 8th 2020.

The shooter - Jakrapanth Thomma, 32 - was finally shot dead around 9am in the mall next morning.

By then 30 people were dead and 58 had been injured, reported Thai Rath.

The attack began with the death of a commanding officer and his mother at a military camp and then armed with stolen weapons and driving a Humvee Jakrapanth set off for the city known as Korat. On the way innocent people died at the temple as the perpetrator streamed live on Facebook.

It was the deadliest such incident in Thailand's history.

At the mall the then RTP chief Gen Chakthip Chaijinda led the police and security teams after large numbers of shoppers - out on a religious holiday - fled in panic or cowered in fear of their lives.

Army chief Gen Apirat Kongsompong promised reforms after criticism as to how easily it was for a rogue officer to steal weapons.

The media was also slammed for its sensational live broadcasts that some claimed gave the shooter information about the whereabouts of security services. Hashtags such as "media without ethics" trended on Twitter.

Yesterday's poignant "tham bun" ceremonies reflected on the tragic loss of life in an incident that soon became yesterday's news with the emergence of the pandemic - but will always be remembered as a tragic day for Thailand.
