A total of Bt210 billion is being pumped into Thailand’s latest COVID-19 relief effort, but experts say needy Thais could fall through cracks in the scheme.

The Rao Chana (We Win) scheme aims to cover almost half the population with payments of Bt7,000 each. However, complaints about the scheme’s eligibility criteria have already triggered doubts about its effectiveness and a change to its screening process.

So far, 6.8 million out of about 10.6 million people who have registered for Rao Chana have passed the screening process, Kulaya Tantitaemit, inspector-general of the Finance Ministry, said on Wednesday.

6.8 million is of course about 10% of the population, so massive numbers "falling through the cracks."

Why do we always smell a rat when the government implements relief schemes involving money?

The remaining question is what kind of vaccine will be used ...the mRNA vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer) or the many times cheaper Astrazeneca and other vaccines?

This is not about vaccines. It's about something much, much more important: who gets all the money.

Why to people on this forum have to believe that everything that gets printed is literally perfect

Only the delusional would think any government would make benefit payments to every one of the population.

Words like "adult" and "eligible" are always implied.

Why not inject the money into the social welfare scheme... those out of work or on low incomes benefit?

My Thai wife (she is over 60) has her B7,000 already allocated to her. This is in addition to I think two or three lots of B3000 already used.

There is some good news (or not). For the period she has been buying beer at reduced price ( up to maximum B300 retail per day) using the scheme. For example, she buys  3 x large bottles of Leo and 3 x Spy Wine Chiller for B189 (can only pay through KTB bank), instead of B264 . I don't think it is really allowed but there is a local shop where she has bought it often - maybe others can find one too! Is definitely not be available in the Supermarkets or 7 -11.

Talking of Leo - for the last few months we have been drinking the Leo 8 Strong Brew. There is a distinct real beer taste to it and I like it better than any other Thai so called "beer" which as you know they call lager beer.

Cheers!

A correction to my previous post re the 50-50 scheme: The cost of 3large beers and 3 Spy Wine Chillers should be B158, not B189.

Sorry for my error
