Would seem that the Mayor would like to see Walking Street, a 24 hour thing, with a roof over it.

 

Very poor idea, could change the atmosphere. They need to leave things alone

Naturally the new Singapore will need a new Clarke Quay.  Make sure it's soulless and expensive and job done.

It's not like they haven't done it before.

Back in '98 I stayed at a hotel on a small soi that ran between WS and the soi behind the Marine Hotel. That was back when bars had to "close" between 6-10 in the morning, which was the only time the music wasn't blaring at ear splitting levels.

Was showing a friend around there in 2004.  They'd put a roof over the soi, the hotel was closed (I think) and a row of bars had been built down the middle (and some obnoxious Arabs at the back end who were very vocal about not wanting any "white" people in "their" area).

You'd never even know there had been a soi there now.

A roof over Walking Street ? Sheesh, that'd turn the area into a long, sweltering sweat box that would require lighting 24/7 and would end up being filled with annoying birds (of the feathered kind) crapping on everyone and everything below.
Just imagine what it would be like during one of the frequent power outages ! Even in the daytime it'd look like a long dark tunnel,

But hey, if you plan is to kill off Walking Street and you can't do it any other way, a roof might be the cheapest option !
