BANGKOK (NNT) - Migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos have until the end of the day to register online for their legal work and residency permit. The Ministry of Labour says so far more than 540,000 applications have been submitted.

The Minister of Labour Suchat Chomklin commented the Ministry of Labour had received more than expected applications for status extension of migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, with the number of applications now more than 540,000, exceeding the expectation of 500,000.

Online registration is still open until tomorrow on https://e-workpermit.doe.go.th/. Employers who still haven’t done so will need to submit a list of their migrant employees from the three neighboring countries by tomorrow, as well as migrant workers submitting their application independently.

The online registration portal will be closing at 24.00 hrs on 13th February. Failure to submit the list in time will prevent employers from taking further steps, and will result in prosecution.

The Department of Employment’s Director General Suchat Pornchaiwiseskul said today the 540,594 applications had been submitted through the online registration portal as of 12th February, with 90% being employed migrant workers numbering 497,785 persons, with the remaining 42,809 persons being unemployed migrant workers.

Most applications are from Bangkok at 102,333 persons, followed by Chon Buri at 38,240 persons, Pathum Thani at 32,416 persons, Samut Prakan at 29,879 persons, and Chiang Mai at 23,986 persons.

Following the online applications, migrant workers will be screened for prohibited diseases including COVID-19, and must have health insurance coverage. Associated fees, assignment dates, and further information can be inquired about directly from responsible agencies.

The Department of Employment recommends insurance packages that include a COVID-19 test, while any persons testing positive for the virus will be treated according to their rights.

Of course. Because they are the filthy ones.

Be thankful Thailand has low status migrant workers or they would be coming after all of us with forced screening and possible encampment.

We've been here before and it did not end well.

I wonder when the mass exodus begins this time?

After that, how many days before the backpedal...

I am surprised at the number of registrations, due to each employer (or employee) having to pay, from memory, 7200 Baht for the 2 year permit.

Estimates i've seen here are 1 to 2 million illegal migrants so I feel if everyone was coming forward it would/should be way higher.

Nice little earner too.

Are we really going to see an increase in testing of 500,000+ people in the reported statistics?

I must have read this headline once every year for the last 25 years at least.

The Government of the day must start to get this under control.

I have no problem with migrant workers (Thailand needs them) but the time has come to document once & for all.

Our extended family employ 11 of them all documented, it is not hard & allows them to get basic medical care
