General service and maintenance inquiry.

I've recently bought an older model car to be more specific it's a Ford Laser glx 2002 model thats clocked aprox 214kms. From my experience driving it so far, the car is real smooth on the road and no suspicious sounds I have to worry about YET hopefully. My friend who I bought it off last serviced it 9 months ago and he was completely honest with the condition of the car.

 

My question is for the experienced car enthusiasts who are familiar with maintenance + part prices. 

 

-Change oil. 

-Change Water pump.

-Change timing and fan belt.

-Change spark plugs.

-Oil and air filters.

-Flush radiator.

-Change transmission fluid.

-Change power steering fluid.

-Check break pads.

 

Note: For my first trip, I'll most likely just change the oil, get new spark plugs do the filters and flush the radiator. 

Then do the timing belt and tensioners + water pump later, if they aren't too worn out yet. But I'm told a new timing belt + fan belt + water pump and maintenance will be costly?

 

This is a comprehensive list of what I want to be done, maybe not all at once but in time overall. Realistically, with the model and age of the car how much will this maintenance cost? I just want at least a general idea of what I may have to spend, that way I'm not left clueless when I walk into the mechanics. This is also for my own curiosity aswell, since this will be my first car EVER ahaha.

I would ask your friend when the timing belt was last changed before driving it too far.

 

AFAIK that model Laser they should be done every 100,000km.

 

I would add to your list a brake fluid flush.

When was the timing belt last changed? If it's not in the service book assume it hasn't been and replace it as soon as possible.

 

Replacing it may be "expensive" but likely rather less expensive than not replacing it and having it fail (not sure if the Laser has an interference engine, if it has and the belt fails, it's new engine time).

He left Thailand yesterday according to the lady's OP, pre-purchase., hence the rock-bottom price.

Spot on! Well he did inform me the timing belt did need changing, so that's the first thing I will get done along with the basics. For a new timing belt + water pump + labor work, how much do you think it will cost?  As you said in a previous post drive it around for a month then see how it goes (to be safe, I don't think i'll take that chance 555+) ..

I would normally agree, but with a known to be end-of-life timing belt ...

A quick google search tells me the belt is Bt.1400 on Ebay for a Dayco belt....doubt it would cost more here.

 

Toss in a few hours labour and it should cost under 2k to have it done... bung the new water pump on a the same time !!

 

edit;... will also need a few new gaskets, belt kit should come with a new tensioner, if not add that into the price.

Why do you need to change the water pump ? Is it leaking ? If not I would leave it alone, the timing belt I can understand, if that goes you could be in all sorts of Doo doo ????

Need to remove the timing cover to change the water pump.... it mounts to the block behind the timing belt, for peace of mind I would replace it whilst the engine is apart getting the timing belt done cause I sure would be annoyed if it shat the bed a few weeks later !!

As I informed you before use a B.Quik or a Cockpit , service cost are very reasonable.

From your disclosure of you drive experience. 

For piece of mine get the timing belt done if it has one not all car have belts.

Okay, I was requested from a friend to check out 'Energy Reform' that's where he does all car maintenance and repairs. When I say friend I actually mean colleague. Any one have previous experience with this company? ???? 

 

NOTE: I've probably learned more about cars in the past two days than I have in my 24 years of being alive. I had no idea what a timing belt or water pump was until 6 hours ago 555+

I went in for an inspection to get an estimated quote and the bill came to 20,000bht. This covers all the that I've mentioned in the previous posts, plus some other minors. I'll attach the form that covers everything listed. Please let me know if I'm getting a good deal or not ???? Much appreciated!

On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt so it is very easy to change it whilst the belt is already removed. This is why timing belt (full) kits come with a new tensioner and water pump.

I have not seen a water pump driven by a timing belt. Is this a relatively new thing?

Not at all. As an example, here's one for a Ford Escort CVH engine, they were introduced just over 40 years ago.
