Shotgun funeral: Mayoral candidate gunned down, four others seriously wounded in brazen attack

A brazen attack by a gunman at a funeral in Ratchaburi left a local official and several candidates for a municipal and mayoral election wounded.

 

A woman campaigning to be mayor later died in hospital from her wounds.

 

Photharam district police and forensics officers found chairs overturned and blood all over a pavillion at Wat Tha Makham where a funeral was taking place.

Yingphan Kanket, the kamnan or local official of Don Sai sub-district was shot as he lit joss-sticks in his role as head of the funeral. 

 

People dived for cover in the confusion as shots that appeared to come from the back of the pavillion rang out.

 

Nakhon Wanphen, a candidate for election in Don Sai municipal elections was also wounded.

 

Three women were gunned down - they were all candidates for mayor in Don Sai. Somthawin and Monthian survived but Woraporn Niamraksa died in hospital.

The victims were taken to several area hospitals.

 

Police found evidence of shooting from both a .22 and an 11 mm gun both inside and outside the pavillion. 

 

The assailant escaped in the confusion. 

 

A poster for the election featuring the dead candidate was published by 77kaoded - she was known as "Khru Nong" or teacher Nong. 

 

Elections are due to take place on March 28th. 

 

The media said that the motive for the attack is yet to be determined but that the elections in Don Sai were a fiercely contested affair.

Don Sai is on my cycle ride every morning, very sad state of affairs. The assailant has now been named by the police. Wife says the victim was his sister-in-law. There has been issues in this Tambon before apparently.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for 60 year-old Ratchaburi provincial councillor Wanchat Niamraksa, the younger brother of the husband of one of the deceased, Mrs Woraphon Niamraksa, who died at the shooting.

Where i live last time election it also did not go as planned,the loser came around here the night after and fired a machine gun in the air.3am.everyone heard it!

We get that too, plus every other afternoon, one of the candidates (number 10, I think) takes control of the village temple amp and speakers, proceeding to ramble on about the importance of voting, and what benefits voters could get choosing the right candidates. This is often peppered with such important information as "I wasn't here for a couple of days as I had the runs". Wish I could vote for that guy, the Mrs. won't be swayed though.
