Health Bizarre Illness: 59-Year-Old Man Found with Larvae Emerging from Body
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 59-year-old man from Mae Chan District in Chiang Rai Province has been hospitalised with a rare and disturbing condition, after reportedly being swarmed by unknown insects while foraging for bamboo shoots in the forest. Within days, insect-like larvae began emerging from various parts of his body, including his eyes, fingernails and even genitals. The alarming case was reported on 7 July by the Thap Yang Mae Chan Rescue Unit, who were called to the man’s home after he experienced increasingly severe symptoms. His condition gained attention online after a local Facebook user, “Noom Phayayom,” shared the rescue incident along with disturbing descriptions. According to the man, shortly after returning home from the forest, he developed itchy wounds on his scalp. When he scratched and pressed the affected areas, small larvae began emerging. Over the following days, similar parasites appeared under his fingernails and toenails, at the corners of his eyes and even in his genital area. He described a persistent crawling sensation beneath the skin, followed by visible emergence of larvae and tiny insects from multiple parts of his body. Rescue workers quickly transferred him to Mae Chan Hospital for urgent medical care. Though tests are ongoing, early speculation suggests he may be suffering from myiasis, a rare parasitic infection caused by fly larvae (maggots) that infest human tissue. Health experts commenting on the case online noted that: 1. Myiasis is typically caused when certain types of flies lay eggs on open wounds or moist skin. The hatched larvae burrow into tissue, causing pain, swelling and secondary infections. 2. Some insects, such as the botfly, are known to lay eggs directly onto human skin, particularly in humid forested areas. 3. The presence of larvae emerging from multiple body sites simultaneously is considered unusual and severe, possibly indicating widespread infestation or a concurrent bacterial infection. There is also concern that bacterial or fungal infection could have exacerbated the symptoms, especially if the insect bites were left untreated. In some cases, co-infection with animal-borne parasites is also possible. Authorities have withheld the man’s exact address to protect his privacy while medical staff continue to monitor his condition. Locals in the area have been urged to take extra caution when entering forested areas and to seek medical attention immediately if they experience unusual skin irritation or insect bites. Doctors at Mae Chan Hospital are currently working to confirm the diagnosis and stabilise the patient, whose condition is said to be improving under observation.
