whats your biggest fear/worry  of retiring in thailand

Where do you come from?

How easy is it in your home country for people to retire?

If you and we like it or not, we are guest in Thailand and it's up to Thailand to make the rules. Nobody of us ever received a document confirming that over decades nothing will ever change.

If you think you should be treated like a Thai then apply for Thai citizenship. And before you complain about the conditions of that look again to your home country.

Care diem

A guest in Thailand?? I am surprised at you saying that. If we are "guests" here, I would sure hate to

be an enemy.

  • Air pollution, particularly in the North. Seems to be getting worse each year. We now know that the long term impact on every organ of the body, including the brain, is pretty bad. Nonsensical and

You must have had dinner parties like that......it's late, you're tired and the dinner guest you never even wanted to invite is showing no signs of leaving......

Get a grip!

Absolutely nothing,a bit of health insurance each year,renew yearly extension and 90 day reports a piece of cake.I prefer a $25.00 monthly elec. bill here in thailand compared to a $300 bill in Oz,likewise my water bill here $8.00 to $200 or so in Oz.

The way some posters carry on you'd think the world was collapsing on top of them lol.

Prison! There is no reason for me to go to prison, I don't do illegal things, but there it is. I wouldn't want to spend 20 minutes in a Thai prison.

Why would you be afraid of that, if you not do anything against the law??

$25.00, is that for one room with a fan?

Being in unbearable pain (physical or mentally) at the end, with no possibility to humanely end it.

Oh I don't know, plenty of comfortable ways out.

Spending all day in air-conditioned shopping malls.

My favourite would involve a bottle of good, single malt plus a couple of fat Js, and cooking a large steak on a charcoal barbeque whilst locked in my air-tight office, with the SMiLE album by The BEach Boys playing.   LOL

As someone planning to to retire at least half the time in Thailand I worry about:

  • feeling separate from friends and family;
  • that it's going to be too hot and uncomfortable;
  • though I like Thai food that it will be hard to get the foods I like;
  • That it will be difficult to find somewhere to live that ticks all the boxes - near fun things, good shopping, not noisy or polluted, near nature or a beach etc.

Lots of positives to offset those concerns.

Not worried about immigration. The retirement visa doesn't see that hard to live by.

1. Skype is like sitting w/your friends... make your coffee before - no waitresses unless you marry one..

2. Most every place has a/c.. I find it important when it is too hot, not to overheat.. have places where you can cool down...  car a/c, home a/c, shopping malls a/c.. swimming pool works too..

3. There are supermarkets and restaurants... in most places.

4. That's why they invented airports... live within a reasonable distance of one and you will be fine. I am also a bit of a place malcontent though I love beign where I am now, out in a very natural setting, I am not crazy about tourist areas, but don't mind living near them... about 20 miles out of an interesting city w/plenty of amenities but still in a mostly Thai area...

I agree, visa is just not an issue... as long as you qualify, it will be fine,.

Welcome to retirement, welcome to Thailand.

I would add the region, since I find Thailand remarkable stable as today and historic. Every modern country have their protests internal challenges and riots as well, and where France  is the closest country from where Im born,  comes to mind when I am thinking of riots in Western Europe. Even army did not make a coup for some few centuries.

My biggest fear is my is if I one day in worst case, do not have a safe return to my orign country. As long my orign country stays as it is, Im good, and can pack up and leave Thailand if that day comes.

I live in just such a place, with shops within a radius of  30km from my house, and many much nearer, where I am yet to be in a position where I want a UK brand, or a food (western) but can't find it.   Just don't live in the sticks; easy.

I live 20km from two main towns which have Big C and Tesco/Lotus, I can get mostly what I need from them and the local fresh food stalls, and once a fortnight I make a day if it and drive to the City which is 90km via the main carriage way which has two lanes in each direction.

Makro and VillaMart are there, so I stock up on all the products that we need, you know the expensive imports where you can't buy anywhere else.

The sticks suits me just on the outskirts of the village where we don't have to put up with loud bands and noisy neighbours.

The only think that is of concern every now and again is the smoke from the ting tongs burning their rice and sugar cane fields, but I make sure not to get exposed to it till it clears around 10am.

Been there, done that.....will never live in a 'sleepy' Thai village again.

Um.  I think maybe that my definition of 'the sticks' and yours differ. I too am around 20 km from a very well stocked Big C and 35km or so from the centre of Pattaya.  I have at least 3 what we call around here 'Farang Shops'' selling imported Western, mainly UK and Oz brands. My wife's village is 100km from the nearest big city, that to me is out in the sticks, and even in that City, you can't easily find farang branded foods and many not at all.

I love the serenity, and not being boxed in with other neighbours around me, being surrounded by greenery at every window I look out makes it evens better than staring into or having your neighbour staring into your place.

I have all of the mod cons that I need here, a very cool house where I don't feel the outside heat, a house 4 times bigger than the box I lived in which cost me 1/10th of what it would have cost me to build back there, e.g. 27,000,000 baht, at least, that wouldn't include the land back there, so add another 27,000,000 baht, so when I look at the figure of 54,000,000 baht, vs 2,500,000 baht for the house and land here, it's a no brainer, we also go on domestic holidays 4 times a year for a seaside change and also try to do an overseas trip every 18 months to go back and see family and friends.

There is a bar within a 20 minute drive up a back road where I get to mix it up with farangs from all around the globe when I feel like socialising, kind of a community.

Very happy with my decision to move here over 5 years ago, got to take the good with the bad, it's not what I am used to, but then again, I am more free here then I was back there, and I have money to live off here vs working like a slave to make ends meet back there, nah yeh, they can have it, Thailand is for me.

This place is on a block less than half the size we are on and it sold on Saturday for 42,300,000 baht, in an average suburb about 18km outside of Sydney in the south.

Biggest fear, getting injured and not having treatment nearby.  I live in Pattaya within minutes of hospital and the yin yang acupuncture guy.  Which BTW the guy is good with those needles and electric stimulation.

Back so bad one morning,  I could barely walk with a cane.  Ordered a Bolt ride, got to the acupuncture place within 5 minutes and was better after 45 minutes of therapy.  Why I do not live 20-30-40 km out of town in my advancing years.

Also why I do not drive a car or a motorcycle, just not a risk i'm not willing to take as I get older, plenty of ride alternatives here in Pattaya, and I can walk home from pretty much any bar, massage, or restaurant if needed.

Everyone I know here that has been injured it is because of accidents in their car, motorcycle, and one guy on his speeding electric bicycle.   Stay safe out there my friends

I can see what you are saying....I was "in the village"

Loud music/5 day funerals/5 day weddings/loudspeakers/packs of dogs (at night).....the whole shooting match......drove me mad.......but, 500m away idyllic ...I agree.

Yep your right, I am truly in the sticks, e.g. water buffalo's usually slowing the traffic down vs cars ????

 Pattaya is a 10/11 hour drive for me on a good day, have stayed in the centre and up the road at Na kluea, fond memories.
