• Country could be next in Asia to expand same-sex-union rights
• Thai laws could soon catch up to country’s liberal reputation

Thailand markets itself as a liberal destination for LGBTQ people and earns billions of tourist dollars from it, yet the nation still doesn’t recognize same-sex unions. That could change as soon as this year.

After nearly a decade, the country now has three potential paths toward recognizing same-sex partnerships, short of full marriage -- a same-sex-partnership bill that received the cabinet’s nod in 2020, a proposed legal amendment that would allow same-sex marriage and a court ruling in April on the constitutionality of denying same-sex couples the right to marry.

These signs point to Thailand becoming the next country in Asia to recognize gay partnerships, a significant move in a region that lags far behind Europe and the Americas in LGBTQ rights.

the LOS system easily waysides the issue from a domestic perspective, saying it is only an introduced  foreigner thing anyway...

3 paths, that's hilarious.  The path should be one, and that's to accept it and allow it.  It is put in the open and observed daily.  Of course there will be puritans along that say a union is between a man and a woman....yet the genie is out of the bottle and unless you want to be like the Muslim world and execute or imprison these people then it's time to move forward in recognizing these couples and allowing them to marry.

It is a simple matter of equality and human rights.

Of course again this year.... or maybe next year or maybe the year after..... waiting waiting and waiting. There is not a lot of willingness to accept the same sex bill. It was approved and committee was set up to double or triple check everything and soon it would be sent to the parliament for approval. October, November, soon it will be sent for approval Before the end of the year it will be sent to the parliament, Now it is almost April, and still nothing. and after approval people have to wait another 4 months before it is published in the royal Gazette.. Yea.. I believe it will be soon

Muslims have too much say...won't happen.

Not sure about that ( and I am even surprised to hear that one) but, before pointing at lobbyist, I would consider the cultural environment and centuries of "let it be as long as you get married and give us grand children" stance

Considering how liberal Thailand is when it comes to gays, ladyboys and transsexuals I’m surprised it hasn't happened already like 20 years ago!

Yeah, we all know where to find 90% of them... only 10% get a fair crack at normal employment.

Two things that are most un-equal in the land of smiles.

it doesn't concern me, i'm a single and have no intention to get  married, let alone with another man! that said, we are supposed to live in a free world so let people marry who they want!
