Thailand Road Carnage: Deaths on the roads continue unabated - 71 dead yesterday

Daily News reported that the death at the scene of accidents - a much lower figure than the total after those on the way to and in hospitals are added - was 71 on Monday.

 

This brought the total to March to 1,468 fatalities.

 

The number since the start of the year is now at 3,904.

 

Dr Thaejing Siriphanich of the Anti-DUI foundation supplied figures to Daily News that showed 14,907 died at the scene in 2019 and 14,825 in 2020.

In the same period last year from January 1st to 29th March there were 3,895 fatalities.

 

With two more days to go this month it is inevitable that this year's first three months will exceed last year's toll for the same period.

 

Thaivisa notes that senior figures in the Thai government have conceded that the death toll on the roads in Thailand is well in excess of 20,000 annually with some organisations putting the true figure as 24,000 to 26,000 annually with up to a million people injured. 

 

Estimates of the fatalities put the number of motorcycle related deaths as high as 80%.

Daily News report the figures daily along with a warning about a particular accident scenario.

 

Today's warning was about being careful following large trucks into U-Turns after an Isuzu pick-up flipped multiple times in Udon Thani on the Friendship Highway heading into the city.

 

It appeared that a Yaris had been following a truck to do a U-turn but had gone out into the central lane and caused a collision with the pick-up.

 

Two injuries were reported.

according to wikipedia estimated daily death tall is 100, total around 35k.

Problem with thai statistics, they don't take into account those, who die at hospitals or at homes within the 30 days after the accident - as this is the international standard for running such statistic.

those differences from 25 to 90 dead, all within days from each other, are clearly just under reporting or over reporting, and not true figures. There can't such differences with such short time.

Just a few days ago there was an article, that a motorcyclist dies every 30 minutes, that 48 every single day.

Being out there on a road anywhere in the country is a potential accident scenario. Too many idiots who just pull out without looking and who have zero idea about traffic rules and risks.

It's even true for pedestrians! Walk on the footpath and get arrogant motorcycle S**m pushing you out the way and so have to walk in road and take your chances! Miserable failed country

Well, I've done my bit to help.  The wife use to ask for driving lessons years ago, and she always got the same reply, "driving lessons...you crash when you walk" - so they never happened, and we are both still here.

Its a never ending situation because of no intervention by the Government. It drives me crazy that so many lives are lost because of the head in the sand mentality.

2 days ago. 3 people dead (including an 8 year old girl). Family riding in the back of the truck, which was probably going too fast. Car pulls out in front of them. Driver swerves and crashes. Car that caused it saw the accident and left the scene. This kind of thing doesn't have to happen. More effort should be made fighting traffic violations. I've never seen anyone get a ticket or suffer consequences for a moving violation in the 5 years I've been here.

Its absolutely appalling, that in this day and age, there are thousands and thousands of deaths on Thai roads.

 

The standard of driving?  Dear god where do I start?

 

   Red lights? Forget it, these lunatics will see a red light from maybe 2-300 yards away...what do they do?   Speed up.

 

Turning left?  They will go into a middle or outer lane, then cut across a lane or two,  (and any traffic which happens to be there) to go on their merry way.

 

Drink driving?  It seems to be the norm.

 

Under age driving? Again , its the norm.

 

Overloading/ sitting on back of pick ups etc? Its the norm.

 

Crash helmets?  No thanks, but will wear a face mask.

 

Police enforcement?  No.

 

I could go on and on and on...Its pathetic really. Every time I go to Thailand, I see a road accident . practically every day.

 

As to how many people die, (on their way to hospital. days or weeks after the accident, those whose have life changing accidents? I guess we will never know the full number.

 

I just cant for the life of me, understand...why this is allowed to go on year after year after year....Words may be said by the numpties in charge...nothing ever gets done though....

Lets say Thailand has 25,000 deaths per year for a population of say 69,000,000.

Let's assume that there are about 8,000,000,000 people in the world.

 

If Thailand road deaths were rolled out over the world (8 Bill), then yearly road deaths would be about 2.8 million deaths per year - roughly the exact same number of deaths as covid.

 

So, would the world have been closed down completely for a plague of road deaths ? I think not.

but any Thai who dies on the road after receiving a vaccination can be counted as a vaccine death....

Of course, not every single driver in Thailand is useless at driving.....seems to be many are though.

After nearly 20 years here, my far from controlled scientific observation is :

Car drivers:

75% of Thai drivers are of a reasonable standard.

15% of Thai driver are poor drivers

10% of Thai drivers shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a car.

 

For motor bike riders:

50% are of a reasonable standard 

50% shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a bike.

I live in Pattaya.  Apart from a three car convoy accompanying a bigwig, I have honestly not seen a single cop in three months.

Getting ready for Songkran they are. They can sit in those tents beside the road and play with their phones all day Honestly those tents are for what? 80.000 extra cops 79999 will be sitting in those tents playing with the phone
