Its a blanket statement should i have named a tribe. My point was more they were warring among themselves pretty brutal before the whites came. Some tribes destroyed others. Yes everyone raped and killed. Sorry was not my intention to make them out any worse then others. Point was there were no whites before but quite  few tribes went extinct because of other tribes.

Is it really racist to think twice who you want in your apartment and building?

I live in a building with people from all over the world (at least pre Covid times). And most of the time all is fine.

We always had a restaurant in the ground floor, mostly Thai food. 

A few years ago the Thai restaurant was closed. And then a black guy rented the place. And then it became an unofficial disco. Many (only) black people in a relative small room, loud music, open till late. There is a public toilet in the building maybe 30m away. Sometimes in the early morning there was toilet paper on the floor between the toilet and our new disco.

I think it took a couple of month to get rid of the new disco. I guess latest since then lots of people in the building would think twice if they would rent any place to a black guy.

Now is that racist? Or realistic? Or maybe just cautious? 

 

And yes, I know there are some nice black people out there. I know some of them and I wouldn't mind if they were my neighbors.

 

In the 14 years I've lived here there have been a number of white farangs arrested for child pornography and pedophilia. What if Thailand decided to ban all western farangs. "Now is that racist? Or realistic? Or maybe just cautious?" And yes I know there are good White people there. I wouldn't even mind having some of them for neighbors.

Lets say anybody of us would look for a new condominium somewhere in Bangkok. In one place are mostly white "Westerners". And in a very similar building there are many people with a dark skin color. Now where would we chose to live? And lets say the condominium in the building with the "white" people would be 20% more expensive; how many of us would be willing to pay 20% more not to live in that building with all those dark people?

 

It's easy to write we are not racist and it's easy to pretend that just the idea that someone would not rent to a black guy is absurd. But let's look at reality. Are we all in real life as equal minded as we pretend to be?

 

Personally I don't think I am a racist. But deep down I have preferences what I like and what I don't like. Maybe for good reason, maybe just the way I grew up with all those white people around me. I am pretty sure many of us are not really as open minded as we pretend to be.

Let me try to explain this to you nicely because I genuinely think you aren't meaning to come across as racist; but that's exactly what you are doing.

In your example, you pit two condos against each other and ask what one the readers would choose. One is even 20% more expensive but because it's white, you wrongly assume that most people would still opt for this. What you are suffering from (and what many of a certain generation and background do) is called covert racism.

Many covert racists use the phrase 'Personally I don't think I am a racist' to salve their conscious because in their mind, racist are aggressive and/or confrontational and since you are neither, you believe you are not racist. However the fact you can even think they way you do makes you racist. Judging anything negatively (in your case a condo decision) solely based on skin colour is inheritantly racist. Trying to drag others into your  bubble with 'Are we all in real life as equal minded as we pretend to be?' is just virtue signalling at it's finest but I'm afraid it doesn't get you off the hook. What you have said is the very epitome of racism so now it's been pointed out, perhaps you could work on that a bit more and over time, understand that yes 'maybe just the way I grew up with all those white people around me' is the reason but it just becomes an excuse to continue with bad behaviour unless you make a conscious effort not to.

When renting out a condo get a reference from a previous landlord and follow up with a call. There’s no reason not to rent out to anyone with a decent reference. 

 

I know a few agents back home who do not rent properties out to Indians/Pakistani's, although that is clear grounds for discrimination, which doesn't exist here, but the agents reasons were you literally need to repaint and replace the carpet at the end of the tenancy because you can't get rid of the curry smell.

 

Cruel world we live in, painting and carpet replacement are a tax deductions as is any vacancy time.

In the west, even mentioning that you don 't want to rent to a certain ethnicity or race could land you in hot water, the ways things are at the moment, you might even get arrested. In Thailand, the vast majority of the black guys I have met are doing something dodgy. I wouldn't want to rent my condo to a convicted pedophile, does that me me a paedo-ist? I wouldn't rent to someone that been in prison, so maybe that makes be a criminal-ist. Like wise I wouldn't want to rent to someone who, from my experiences, is likely to be doing something that's not quite kosher. Sometimes you have to ignore people who accuse you of being racist and protect your property and interests by using common sense.

This is a non sequitur. You are conflating not wanting to rent out a condo to a black man with not wanting to rent out a condo to a criminal. Pretty disgusting and I don't even want to comment on your other claim.

I would gladly rent my house out to a black man in the UK. But in Thailand I would not.
