The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) is recommending that people take the opportunity to view the first of only two super full moons of this year, visible from 7pm tonight.

The moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is at its farthest point from Earth, because it is the moon’s arrival at its perigee, its closest orbital point to Earth.

The moon will be about 384,400 km from Earth, which is about 8% closer than average distance for a full moon. This fluctuation in the moon’s distance is caused by its orbit around the Earth not being perfectly circular, but very slightly elliptical.

Misleading caption.

Should read: "Manipulated photos courtesy of..."

No "super moon" ever is as large as shown in these photoshopped pictures.

The astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson was quoted as saying

"If last month's Full Moon were a 16.0 inch pizza, this month's "Super" Moon would be 16.1 inches"

Puts it into context, a lot of stuff about nothing.

You need to take it from far away with zoom lens and you can get a photo like that. And you need to do it when it's very low on horizon.

Funny that a full moon is occurring and it is not a Buddha Day.  Buddha Day is Monday today is Wednesday.

By the way the full moon in April 2021 occurred at 11:32 PM EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) on April 26.  The moon was at perigee (222,064 miles from Earth) at 11:22 AM EDT on April 27.

Here in Nong Khai the sky is overcast so even if there was a full moon I could not see it.
