Higher, faster, deadlier: Third wave of COVID triggers growing fear in Thailand

A grim warning has been issued by a leading medical expert as Thailand grapples with its third and worst wave of COVID-19: expect a double-digit death toll to become regular daily occurrence.

 

Prof Dr. Prasit Watanapa, dean of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, spoke up on Tuesday (April 27) as the country recorded its second day of two-figure fatalities – 15 COVID-related deaths. The first came just two days earlier amid a death toll that has been mounting every day since April 17.

 

“At Siriraj Hospital, about one in four COVID-19 patients has developed lung inflammation,” Prasit said, “This rate, which is more than before, will translate into a higher mortality rate – a two-digit figure [perhaps daily]”.

Just read an article in the BP.....guy (youngish)...ill (usual symptoms).....couldn't get a test......couldn't get into hospital........ambulance wouldn't pick him up.      ...eventually found dead........recorded as heart attack!!!!

The deniers will be happy with Thailands approach, keep the numbers low and attribute death to other causes. Make sure that not everyone can get tested. That one way to keep it down. The fact that we read more and more about having problems getting tested makes me lose faith in the numbers.

The hospital he first applied to said they only did 20 tests a day....no appointment system........he went at 0530 next day....too late!!!

You have to wonder with a lack of beds and those not being moved to a hospital from homes how many deaths above those reported there may be.

This B1.1.7 UK strain is a different beast. It isn't only Thailand copping it.

44% of new US cases are the B1.1.7 now. 

The figure in Thailand of the UK strain is 98%. Without it it would be pretty much normal here like the second half of last year.

Do they understand that death is a lagging indicator, and that with 2,000 to 3,000 cases every day for the last week the number of deaths is bound become much higher in the near future.

I just tried to mail an envelope to Singapore. Was told by the PO that I could not because the Suvarnabhumi sorting office has been closed because of Covid cases. Was told to come back on 5th May.

Did the UK not move away from ventilators quite early on as they were found not too work or worse trigger a negative response in patients?

 

The 'amazing' UK ventilator challenge resulted in the government buying 30,000 ventilators and only using 2000+............

Highly transmissible virus, lack of an effective vaccine, probably followed by the lack of an effective vaccine roll out, they will open up too early and face further waves.......something like that?

Non-stop cremations cast doubt on India's counting of Covid dead

 

In one crematorium in the western Indian state of Gujarat, gas and firewood furnaces have been running so long without a break that metal parts have begun to melt. In another crematorium in Uttar Pradesh state, the number of cremations have jumped by five times in recent weeks during India's second Covid-19 wave.

 

"We are working around the clock at 100% capacity to cremate bodies on time," Kamlesh Sailor, the president of the trust that runs the Gujarat crematorium in the diamond-polishing city of Surat, told Reuters.

Of course they do.

In the UK deaths peaked 18 days behind cases, 26th Jan and 8th Jan respectively. Cases peaked at 67K and deaths at 1.63K, about 2.4%.

On a pro rata basis if cases were to peak at around the 3000 figure then the peak in daily deaths would be around 73. 

On 10th April cases were shown to be 789 so on the same 18 day basis deaths of around 19 could have been expected today, but is not an exact science.

The daily numbers are clearly understated.  Even people wanting a test can’t get one and who would want a test if it means being imprisoned in a sports stadium for two weeks plus, quite likely in a remote province?

 

People will only get tested when they get ill.

 

The constant references to the medical conditions of those who died are a form of victim blaming and insensitive to their families. Just stop

Back in April last year, I watched a broadcast by the association of foreign press or something like that, here in Thailand, and a rep from hotels and tourism said they thought that things wouldn't really return to a recognisably normal state until 2025.

 

That surely would be the death knell for tourism in Thailand.  UNLESS - we learn to live with it. Let's see how far we are on with a vaccine at the end of the year.

IF most (70% +) are vaccinated by Jan 2022, I think it's permissable to suggest things getting back on track by June next year.

Ha....wife just this second walked with a box of 50.....I send her out to do all the shopping now and make sure she washes when she gets back.....not a fan of covid.

Experts once again make it out as if its totally unexpected and surprising.

 

Covid has been around for over a year, Thailand did very little testing but did lots of talking how healthcare is ready and can handle it. Turns out not only not ready, but not enough beds, not enough equipment and not enough medication

 

I recall in the start, they mentioned private hospital would be asked or made to provide care, and yet it has not happened, Also why people with mild symptoms are held in the hospital beds, they can either self isolate at home or put them in ASQ hotels so ones in more serious condition can get help

Why would I need another mask, I've been using the same one for over a year.

It's still got plenty of use left in it.

What I find tragic is that people who are asymptematic/positive showing no symptoms are hospitalised, yet someone like the young man mentioned in another post died because he couldn't be admitted due to all the beds being taken!

 

Could they not be quarantined in their own homes, thereby freeing up beds for more needy cases??
