PHUKET: A 35-year-old man escaped serious injuries as the car he was driving slammed into a power pole north of Phuket Town this afternoon (May 15), as did a young man who lept to safety as downed power lines came crashing down onto his motorbike while he was riding past.

Phuket City Police officers and Kusoldharm rescue workers were called to the scene, near the Ministry of Finance office on Trang Rd in Rassada, at 2:10pm.

The officers arrived to find a white Nissan Juke sedan crunched into a power pole by the side of the road.

How do they manage to hit these poles on the side of a straight road . Did he fall asleep , using his mobile or was the motorbike somehow involved or did his brakes fail ,dog run across the road ?

Simply he was a Thai male driver, no further questions needed.

Thai male drivers don't make mistakes, obviously the pole cut him off.

It was a PEA employee cutting the power off to the adjacent neighborhood. It's more efficient this way than to remove meters at each house along the route.

What sort of speed would you have to be doing to do that sort of damage..

Two points to make:

- Is there any other country in the world where power poles cause so many problems for motorists ???

- How poorly are the power poles installed that when one falls the domino effect brings down another 8 ?

Even if it was an electric bike, I hope the police aren't going to charge him.

They need to make the power poles weak in order to minimise the damage to the car every time cars hit them. If they're rigid then the car will absorb all the damage and the occupants would probably die instantly. Instant deaths are bad because they get counted in the country's road deaths.

In the seven years I've been in my house here there have been around 20 accidents within 500 metres on what is a straight road. There have been deaths, amputations, cars and lorries in the roadside ditch, someone in a long-time coma, a car flying through the top of a tree. It is quite incredible how so often Thais can't even navigate a straight road.

I assume the poles will always be far enough apart not to hit each other, as I always thought that like poles repel.

Luckily he avoided all charges.
