since my last stomach flu. I thought wow this virus really made everything cleaner and more sanitized. I was quite happy for more than a year not h$itting my pants, but yesterday it hit like ton of bricks sort of speak.

I should really cook at home more often.

How long since your last stomach flu?

So basically "an upset stomach" generally from eating something dodgy or poor food hygeine practices.

To answer the OP question then, not for over 15 yrs.

For me it's over 20 years ago - on our honeymoon on Koh Chang. A rancid piece of fillet steak disguised by pepper sauce.

At first I thought I was going to die - later I was wishing to die.

I hope we're not tempting fate.

Either you should stop eating off the street, or go for an endoscopy.

When I first started coming to LOS I would eat almost any street food. Now, I mainly cook at home, or eat at decent restaurants.

Few months ago, hit an Indian restaurant in Bangkok. Felt awful next day. Had the liquid diareeah bad, weakness and also chills. Only lasted a day. Diarreah remained off on for a week.

Not the most fun topic but I am going to contribute this anyway ...  in case a squillion people had similar on the Ghan. I was on holiday touring round OZ.

I have only had food poisoning once in my life. I knew exactly what restuarant poisoned me.  I was on the "Ghan"  .. the 3 day and 3 night train trip Darwin to Adelaide. I.e Australia top to bottom. No other restuarant available or did I have my own food.

The restuarant supplied all 3 meals a day.  On the second evening I ate with a charming old lady and a New Zealander.   He paid for the wine.

A few hours later I had projectile vomiting.  I did not get to the tiny fold away toilet in time first throw -up.  So spewed massively over my tiny broom cupboard size room floor.  Much more vomit followed.

But I had Bangkok belly too. I will spare you the details but not easy to manage eruptions both ends.

The toilet was a tiny fold away contraption .. I guess not large pipes.  It blocked solid. It would not flush 'things' away. Overflowed with sick and worse because I panicked and overdid the ineffectful flushing.

So .. with toilet full of spew and <deleted> .. charming ...overflowing .. and sick on the floor, I had no alternative to press the bell for the all night steward.  He came eventually.

He had to clean it all up and unblock the toilet.  He had a very glamouress job.  He was surprisingly chilled  ... Just as well as he was the waiter who served the food that poisoned me. Of course I had no cleaning gear so could not sort myself.

I went off to the shower room .. up the corridor.  Then waited in the restuarant / passenger lounge area till it was all cleaned up.. .. took about an hour as toilet blockage needed sorting.

He said it was not an uncommon problem .. the toilet design clever regarding folding away and blockages occurred but he never had to clean vomit and sh*t up before.

Maybe I should have complained to the health police to check that kitchen out.  Im vegetarian so it could not have been dodgy meat or fish.  Just bad hygiene.

Enjoy your meal as you read this.

My memories of the Ghan mixed because of them poisoning me. But Katherine (helicopter tour of the gorge)  and Alice Springs tourist stops fond memories.

Since about 2 years ago, I swore I wouldn't eat out anymore here, although my wife has told me that I should feel comfortable eating where she eats, so I have followed here advice, but seldom eat out.

Been on the drip here twice at the local hospital that I can remember, once from eating spring rolls from the local village market, and the other time was from Phuket.

Before Thailand when I was back in Oz, my spew was lime green in colour, hospital gave me a shot and a bag and within a minute, the whole place could here me spewing, even had a male nurse come into the room and look at me, smiled and said, ah your all good mate and left, I could have killed him....that was much worse than here in Thailand, I believe that was the real gastro they talk about.

Note to self: "Do not make any fart jokes."

In all seriousness, get some loperamide (Imodium) and consume lots of electrolyte powder drinks.

Very common in my short five years here. My situation is complicated by IBS, so I have had numerous embarrassing incidents. There is nothing worse than constantly feeling like you have to "go" when there are no toilet facilities available. Third world problems.

In my experience, loperamide is nearly worthless in these circumstances. There is a local brand called Smecta that seems to be slightly better.
