GENEVA, June 1 (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved a COVID-19 vaccine made by Sinovac Biotech for emergency use listing, the second Chinese-produced shot to get its endorsement, a WHO statement said on Tuesday.

WHO emergency listing is a signal to national regulators on a product’s safety and efficacy. It would also allow the shot to be included in COVAX, the global programme to provide vaccines mainly for poor countries, which currently faces major supply problems due to India’s suspension of vaccine exports.

In a statement, the independent panel of experts said it recommended Sinovac’s vaccine for adults over 18, with a second dose 2-4 weeks later. There was no upper age limit as data suggested it is likely to have a protective effect in older people.

Why isn't the efficacy of Sinovac listed with more details?

Were any papers written and published with peer-reviews done?

What is the length between jabs going to do for Thailand - second dose 2-4 weeks later ?  The "know-all" government is stretching the period between jabs way out there ....

Sinovac is 21 days.

I think that the upper age limit of 60 YO has also been removed.

The PM was fortunate.

Brilliant example of denial.

Perhaps the conspiracy theorists will have to find a new target.

That's right, don't say anything that goes against the grain, or even have an opinion, God forbid, off you go, get your Sinovac jab then.

And according to Chulalongkorn and Chinese Media 99.49% patients developed antibodies 4 weeks after receiving 2 shot so that's reassuring.
Not sure how reliable those test results from Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey and Pakistan are going to be.
Will also be interesting to see if it's given to any 1st World Countries considering it's relative high price too.
And thank you Thailand for being our Lab Rat's lets see how effective it is in Phuket as I believe 70% of the population have already received it?

The one thing most people are not understanding is that these vaccines have only been approved by the FDA for "Emergency Use" as stated.  People seem to skip over this.  Approval for emergency use, will last 2 years, while the manufacturers regularly update the FDA on the effectiveness and safety over this time.  Not one covid vaccine is fully approved and will not be until this period is up.  While these vaccine are only approved for emergency use they are still regarded as, in trial.

It is all largely irrelevant as we will all be getting booster jabs (of whatever brand) next year.

Show me one that has been fully approved. I'll won't wait while you are trying to find it, because I don't have that much time.  There are a few that have applied for full approval, but there are non that have been full approved.  They are currently an "Emergency Use Only" medication/vaccine.

Totally agree.  Just the Flu vaccination..... imagine that. Yet people still die each year of the flu.  They aren't going to stop this.  We just need to learn to live with it.

Trying to compare the flu to this virus doesn't work.  The flu does kill some every year.  Numbers vary, but it's anywhere from 300-600k each year.  A bit less than what we're experiencing now with covid!!

We'll live with it when we get vaccines for it.  mRNA technology is amazing and they're working on a combined jab for the flu and CV19.  Perhaps even a pill.

This might help you to understand the process for vaccines.

  • Pre-clinical stage
  • Clinical development

I didn't compare the virus to the flu, I was stating that boosters will be needed the same as the flu vaccine is, each year.

Well, they are both fruits , they are both round shaped , they both contain healthy vitamin C , they both grow on trees.

Might be better to say:  Comparing COVID-19 Deaths to Flu Deaths Is like Comparing Apples to Bacon sandwiches.

It depends on what you want to put the magnifying glass on , their similarities or their differences.

A Thai friend who just got Sinovac in Bangkok got the 2nd jab 3 weeks after the 1st one. Not sure if that's standard in Thailand or if there's some variation though.

That may have been true before the PM and his council said it was going to push the interval to 12 weeks.  They want to get more people with a single jab before moving on to 2nd jabs.  This was just last Tue I believe ...

That's good on one hand...

But now it's eligible for COVAX, there will be less available for Thailand.

Won't change much, they have been donating the vaccine rather than through the COVAX.

I have read in so many places the recommended interval is 2-4 weeks. Is there any scientific research that would support pushing it out so far? A simplistic view, given the well publicized results suggesting efficacy of a single jab is very low, mean high risk and possible infections for many people for an extra 9 weeks.

WHO approval for Sinovac will be very helpful for older people who have history of anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions from mNRA vaccines like Pfizer or Moderna. The range of different vaccines are necessary for the different medical conditions.

I do remember the PM stating that from now on the gap for astrazeneca will be 16 months. That is an excuse for an acute shortage of this vax. For june migh be coming less than 10% of the promised 6mln. Ready now are 270k, another 350k will be coming within the next 2 weeks. That might be all this month.

That's why more sinovax was ordered - now some 6mln. So it will be available and at short interval. Problem being that thai population is shy of this vax due to side effects.

And why sinopharm 20mln was ordered just the last week

so okay the 99.49% figure would have been obtained by sampling their limited number of test cases (guinea pigs)...

 - but what about maintaining a consistent product warranty check regime; by bringing back each and every public domain vaxxed patient 4 wks after their 2nd jab

- to really really confirm the figures remain consistent throughout the populace?
