Etiquette for harboring a debtor

Featured Replies

Old friend of ours has been staying with us for a couple of weeks with no clear departure date. Why? The husband and wife team have racked up debts that they can’t service (house, car, credit cards). They’ve ignored court orders to come forward so they work out a payment plan. They just hope it will somehow go away. No foresight, no clear plan, she cries herself to sleep but the next day back to normal so it seems to me.  Car repossession is temporarily on hold while she’s here.
Question is how long would you allow her to stay if you were in my shoes?

I'd throw them out period. There is is no excuse for over commitment, or any other form of recklessness. These people seem to believe it is acceptable to make themselves a burden for others.

Bad debt is not a criminal offence in Thailand.

The worst court outcome is she won't be allowed to own property or vehicles or a bank account for 5 years.

How long would I allow her to stay?

Depends on her age, looks and friendliness.

Rule of Thumb: only harbor fugitives that are filthy rich, otherwise your own assets are at risk

Allow them to stay for two more weeks (so, a total of one month) and give them a gift, now, of 10K for personal spending, to help take some of the pressure off.

Wouldn't of let them stay in first place sent them to the nearest temple.

Hmmm....this makes me a little suspicious.

Is she wanted by the police?

If not, do as @Poet suggests.

One: How much are you charging for rent?

Two: Are they paying upfront?

Three: Have you taken a deposit?

their debts are not your problem, are they?

you have house guests. just like any guest, if they linger it's up to you to drop a hint if they have over stayed their welcome.

how do you do that? you man up and let them know it's time to move on.

try something like: "we have really enjoyed you staying here for two weeks and we hope to meet again next time, however me and the missus would like to get back to our daily routine living alone now. i would be glad to give you a ride to the train station in the morning if you need one."

I got a 45K phone bill once even tho it had a 10K limit, offered to pay the 10K and they said no.

Therefore i paid nothing, no recourse, just blacklisted from that company...so what

I would sit them down today and just say friendly and politely,  ' What are your future plans? "

Obviously guys, as you know we can't have this arrangement forever.

Then let them do the talking or sit and look at them until you get an answer!

They are not fugitives are they .Accumulating dept without fraud is not a criminal offense otherwise half the population of Thailand would be Fugitives.

These people are distressed because of  problems of their own making.  However they must be friends of yours for you to take them in so please be kind and help them face the creditors as hiding in your property is not helping anyone.

There is no need to hide, they can just tell creditors they canoot pay, it's not the end of the world, nothing will happen.

Thai's normally think nothing of this prediciment.

The op keeps saying * she* , does that mean the husband is not staying ? In such a situation , presuming the *she* is Thai , tell her you have family coming and she/ they must leave . That is if you can’t say the truth that they must leave . She must have family somewhere .

Not sure I agree with you,

The last covid lockdown, most of my misses pals were having a hard time but surviving.

This current covid lockdown, they are handing their cars back and becoming homeless.

There's only so long that the people can hold out with little work and no prospects.

I'm guessing this is a wind-up, but if I had an old friend that was in trouble I would help them until such time as I no longer considered them  a friend.

Do yourself a favor and go rent them a fan room somewhere they can sleep and pay for six months rent.

Work out a...*COUGH* “payment plan” with the wife. You could do it in heh, “installments” instead of a typical rent scheme

So when the mafia comes to collect do you really want to be in the cross hairs.

That would depend on who the creditors are.

The local kneecappers, Pon and his brother "Big Meow"?

So they lose house and car and get chased by the bank for the credit cards .

They won’t go to jail or get arrested but will have zero credit rating !

How about drugs and/or gambling? Those are the habits, at least for some people, to do crazy and irrational and illegal things...

I thought by now it's model 12 and nobody wants that old 11 anymore.

I had a scam caller last week saying that someone had used my Amazon account to buy an iPhone 11, so I assumed that it was the latest, most expensive toy.

I'll ring them back to tell them to update their sales pitch ????
