Another lot of a million doses of Sinovac vaccine from China arrived in Bangkok today and is now being examined by the Thai Medical Sciences Department for certification.

Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrachit said today that, once the vaccines are approved, they will be quickly distributed to various provinces and Bangkok.

The Medical Sciences Department will start examining the vaccines at 6pm today and expects to complete the task in one or two days, as the batch must be accompanied with its production protocol summary and lot release documentation.

Look on the bright side. I've heard it makes an excellent nail polish remover.

With reception here being so poor I expect it will soon appear in the ubiquitous 20฿ shops.

Nobody knows what the long term effect these vaccines will have. My advice would be is wait for the better vaccines.

What are your qualifications or experiences that might make your opinion carry weight?

Nobody wants that ineffective vaccine in my wifes family.  Its obviously someone is just getting a profit from this at the expense of the Thai people once again.

I wonder what happens if you have two of these dodgy vaccines then decide to get another two of a better vaccine

That would be great to know.  It's going to be a while until Moderna arrives.

Today Biden pledged the USA would be giving out 0.5 billion vaccines to the poor countries and the UK said it will give out 100 million. Five of those by September. Other G7 countries will join in for sure. I wonder if Thailand can get on the list.

The owner of the place I rent went for their vaccination appointment at 7:30 this morning at Udorn General hospital. They were turned away without appointment renewal due to lack of vaccine and no information about when it will be available. Yep, great organising Mr. DPM

Sinovac is not ineffective, just not as good as the others, that does not make it not worth having if it's all that's on offer

As always, way too little, way too late.

Seems to be no news about the millions expected from home made AZ, apart from the claimed 1.8 mil last week

What would be a better choice, Sinovac or home made AZ ?

Every little helps I suppose.

When considering the 70% target by the government, let’s keep in mind this is a similar target set by western governments, who have had it (COVID) much worse.

Given current case distribution, I would be optimistic that a heavily targeted initial vaccination drive, focusing on the more impacted central provinces and only limited high risk groups elsewhere, could see us in a much better place within 2-3 months. A broader nationwide vaccine programme can then follow, when more supplies are finally available.

So what is China saying about these vaccines and their effectiveness?

They keep trumpeting the fact that these vaccines still prevent severe illness and death, which by all accounts, they do. Even in the Seychelles, all the people I interviewed who had Covid after getting the Sinopharm vaccine said that they have had mild symptoms and they were able to recover at home. But experts have told me that because the Chinese vaccines lag behind other Western vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna, in terms of efficacy, that really means that countries that choose to use them will take longer to reach herd immunity.

"

Why is that?

A couple of experts have done some modeling that shows that basically, if you use a vaccine with 90 percent efficacy against infection, that means you can reach herd immunity if 66 percent of the population is vaccinated. But if you use a lower efficacy vaccine, you need many more people to be vaccinated. So, for example, if the vaccine is 60 percent effective, then the portion of the population that needs to be vaccinated is 100 percent. That’s the real issue with the Chinese vaccines. They’re very useful for countries in preventing severe illness and death, but if you want to reopen the economy quickly, I think they would need to reassess whether using a Chinese vaccine is the best bet for them.

Biden might have to take back that pledge as I just heard that America just lost 400 billion dollars giving out the covid checks. Fake people and overseas criminals.

In Serrana Brazil after about 75% of the adult population was vaccinated with Coronavac, herd immunity seems to have been established . But in that case about 25% of the population that already been infected so if you do the math it took about 83% of the adult population to be either vaccinated or infected to establish herd immunity
