We are moving house from Hat Yai, Songkhla - to a village outside Khon Kaen. It’s something we have planned for six months already, we bought land in the village and have a rental property, the wife has visited twice recently.

The removal truck turned up this morning, loaded everything up, and is on the way. We are waiting on a hotel for our flight in the morning.

Suddenly, we are getting calls from the landlady, locals want to know where we are moving from, because they are scared we are going to infect them with Covid, further calls from her indicate that our arrival is becoming a big local Issue.

Next, a doctor from the local clinic is on the phone saying that the “centre for Covid prevention” - the sor-bor-sor has announced that people coming from Bangkok and the four southern provinces need to self isolate for 14 days.

She explained that I have a respiratory condition and that we have been self isolating for the last 18 months. The guy seemed to change his tune a little.

TLDR - Given the propensity of these local government officials to make stuff up to suit themselves, where do I find the truth?

Tbh, I don’t mind self isolating for 14 days, If no one comes and sticks their nose in, I will be over the moon. I don’t want to sound selfish but we have obligations, such as visit immigration to do TM30, If these people that are so scared, are they going to hang food parcels on the gate or with the absence of food panda fo we just starve to death? It doesn’t seem like a well thought out idea to me.

Figure it out as you proceed I guess, either they help you to isolate or you have no choice but to break it to get supplies.

They know this already.

Based on what I've read COVID is already rampant in the south anyway.

This will probably be better in the actual covid forum, moving there.

What "zone colour" is your current location?

Well Red apparently, but when the government has made such a balls up of the situation already.

Yes, please move this to Covid forum

and I will head over for some more research.

Songkhla is dark red now.

May be an image of map and text that says 'Dark-Red Red Provinces NBT WORLD 1.Bangkok 2. Nakhon Pathom 3. Nonthaburi 4. Pathum Thani 5. Samut Prakan 6. Samut Sakhon 7. Narathiwat 8. Pattani 9. Yala 10. Songkhla Effective from Monday, 28 June 2021'

One option in most provinces to avoid the self quarantine is to get a test for covid 19.

You may need that to get a flight Khon Kaen now.

That certainly explains the request for self quarantine in KK.

I doubt anyone will let our OP starve (although getting in some hard-tack foodstuffs wouldn't hurt).

There are no direct flights any longer.

Long story - but our cats are in a cattery in Don Muang, we arrive and get a car tomorrow.

Don't tell them where you came from is the obvious answer.

Too late now but next time remember ......... loose lips sink ships!

Correct - the missus has been gossiping with local bumpkins for a month or so now. I told her to keep out of the village business and that it will only lead to trouble. Now this ..

“and required documents issued by various agencies” - typically totally ambiguous.

I would suggest contacting the head of the village you're moving to and asking him what the requirements are. Explain your situation and it will make your move a lot smoother. Disregard anything anyone else tells you and only liase with him. He may organise a nurse to visit daily and record your temperature and she may or may not show up. Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.

sell land, sacrifice your house deposit and move to some place where you will not be misunderstood and hated for years. Some place, where there are a lot of foreigners, it be tourists.

some large town, to keep neighbour's noses out of your business

I would want to see that in official writing before I believe a local clinic village doctor as from what I have seen, its Buriram province that requires 14 day self isolation.

Good idea. Trouble is, do you remember a year back to when the locals got a similar idea after a westerner returned from a break in Phuket, they rallied the local headman to tell they weren’t welcome, even tho’ the guy was quite happy to self isolate, they weren’t having it, nothing even the police could (would) do and he was forced to retreat .. this isn’t an isolated incident from what I hear.

Oh well, let’s see tomorrow.

Good idea, I will contact my lawyer and they can show him some paperwork.

I do remember that but Thais have had a year to get used to living with the virus although I do acknowledge that many remain fearful. Contacting the village head will display that you're keen to fit in without making a fuss or pushing back on any requirements. My wifes family tend to come and go so this is what we do to keep updated with any procedures. At times they've said there is a quarantine period so travel plans have been scrapped or put off.

I don't think you'll be greeted by a lynch mob and if you deal with the head of the village he will be able to reassure the locals that everything is under control - plus if anyone else calls you, you an let them know you've spoken to the head of the village and refer them to him. Keep us updated anyway but I think you'll be fine.

@heist

Just received this from the landlady followed by 5555

28/7 from provincial admin

Procedure for travel from 10 un named provinces to khon Kaen city (although it’s outside, it’s on the verges of the city jurisdiction)

1. Scan QR Code.

2. Contact local “or-sor-mor” which is like a local health rep.

3. Isolate 14 days.

Not too sure how to proceed tbh ..

So much to do when moving 1500km, no food - so what to do? get the driver to take us to big C in a neighboring province, kind of defeats the object but achieves the objective. It’s not like we can stay in HY for another month or two, the house is on two trucks heading north.

No internet, we need to go to KK office with my wives ID to start the ball rolling, No TV as TV is through 3BB.

What a total f’up ..

I'd still talk with the head of the village you're moving to and ignore the landlady for now. The reason I keep on about it is because he will be in touch with the head of the province about exactly what needs to be done. There's so much misinformation flying around at the moment and I imagine it will reduce your stress if you only have to deal with one person.

If you need to organise a visit from a health rep (which is just someone who comes to check your temperature and see if you have any symptoms) he will do that, and keep you up to date with any other provinicial requirements. He will likely have to provide an update with the head of the province with his local situation which is nothing to worry about. They just like to know that everything is being managed and under control.

As far as food goes absolutely you can get enough for a few days on your way there. When the wife and I returned from Laos we had to isolate for 14 days we picked up some food on the way home and my wife organised with one of the neighbours to do a food run for us every few days (we'd leave the money in the back of our pickup and our neighbour would leave the food there as well). Thai people have an uncanny skill of being able to find food anywhere so might be time to lean on your wife to organise that after you arrive.

Can your wife get internet through her phone so you can at least keep in touch with the outside world and up to date with news while you're self-isolating?

Good advice, for sure, I always ignore the local plebs, and rather deal it’s informed people but there doesn’t seem to be much confusion, it’s there in black and white. I despise these LINE messages, they don’t seem to have any provenance.

We have one real friend in a neighboring village, who suggested we should keep intouch with the doctor who called us earlier, he seemed to be assured that I was in a high risk group and have been keeping myself safe and away from parties and building camps for the past 18 months, he asked lots of questions about our habits, perhaps he has some degree of local “discretion”.

Our friend said there seems to be a bit of a local spike, seems a bit of a stable door situation, but what to do?

Apparently, macro and big c deliver to the village.

The internet is a bit more of an issue, I need internet to work and I face hash fines for bad connections and unscheduled leave. Anyway I spoke to 3BB and they will accept a scan of her ID to proceed, I had this with AIS before, they want you to stand around in a shop, but when pressed it’s perfectly fine to send a scan and a pic of me holding my passport to my chest.

FWIW - Songkhla has today imposed the same self isolation requirements from the 10 dark red provinces, even tho it’s a dark red province itself, however if you have 2 jabs, then you are exempt.
