A new online campaign to save a prominent Thai virologist trended on social media Wednesday in response for calls to have him removed due to his views on vaccines.

More than 9000 people had previously signed a change.org petition to discharge Dr Yong Poovorawan, a prominent supporter of the chinese-made Sinovac vaccine, from his position as chief of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology.

Dr Yong is known as one of Thailand’s top virologists – and has gained more prominence when he was put in charge of handling the Covid-19 situation. He is head of the virology centre at Chulalongkorn University.

Nice attempt at backpedaling.  But, okay.  Let's go down that rabbit hole...

Perhaps they're not fans of vaccine diplomacy.  Perhaps they don't support a guy advocating the vaccine with the lowest efficacy of the major approved vaccines, keeping in mind that every dose of Sinovac means the gub'ment will buy one less dose of a different vaccine they'd prefer (right or wrong)  Perhaps they suspect the guy's wealth is somehow related to his position and his advocacy of this particular vaccine...  I could go on.

If you put a change.org petition up to the TVF gallery, I suspect you'd get at least the same negativity rate toward Sinovac advocates.  1 in 7200.

I don't know enough about the guy to judge one way or the other.  But I'll bet the Thai people do.  Even the netizens.

Dr. Yong has been a mouthpiece for whatever the governments position currently is or has flipped and  backflipped into. Many Thai citizens feel their record in combatting the virus has been less than competent. They are not slagging, they want him out, just like they want his main supporter, Minister Anutin OUT.  It's a start.

This government stooge attempts to justify every poor decision the government  makes despite the scientific evidence to the contrary. Every bit of support he gives gets massive media coverage of course.

Someone like this can be very dangerous at times like these.

It is reassuring that the Thai people have seen through the facade of this “benevolent, wise old man”.

he is not in charge, we know who is, there is a special decree on this, in a case you missed it

He's ethnically Chinese, so it really is not a surprise he's a Sino supporter.

His change.org supporters are likely to be predominantly ethnically Chinese. Many (or even most) could even be China "wumao" trolls.

Save him from what.. social media.

He's government approved, they don't care about what social media say.

The head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University, virologist Yong Poovorawan,  recommended in his Facebook post that children aged three years old and over should be vaccinated and the vaccine made by Sinovac was the best option as the side effects were less severe.

Hmm.

Reminds me of all the pro monarchists coming out after the protests.  95% of them were young men in military haircuts trucked in dump trucks.

Anutin telling all his employees to put a good word in for this government stooge.

Dr Youngs prominence via Google from what I see ????

Perhaps he has a distinguished background in research, at least by undemanding Thai standards, but since the COVID started he has spouted a incessant stream of drivel in support of vested interests that are profiting from Sinovac imports at inflated prices. Most of it is just personal opinions without citing any methodology and unsupported by any research.  He is a big supporter of Sinovac and likes to cite completely unreliable statements that come out of China as if they are scientifc fact.  He has ignored evidence that Sinovac doesn't protect against delta from other countries and now wants to vaccinate 3 year old kids with it, just because Sinovac told him that was a good idea.

I am not surprised people are fed up with him and want him to retire.  He is an old style Thai Chinese doctor who believes that Thai people are stupid and should not be told the truth.

Bear in mind, Dr in this country are next to "GOD" whoever that is, and only outranked by a pretend boy scout  General who has by slight-of-hand become a pretend PM.

Is this the doctor who wants to vaccinate 3 year olds with Sinovac?

The world has gone mad.
