Kasikorn Thai bank's research arm told Daily News about the economic impact of the government's decision to ban in-restaurant dining in Bangkok and surrounding areas.

A worst case scenario sees the year round impact of the pandemic on the restaurant sector as 70 billion baht.

The pandemic's third wave has proved disastrous for a sector already reeling from last year and earlier in 2021.

Kasikorn noted that the effect has been particularly felt on larger restaurants or "suan aharn" in Thai and buffets that rely on in-house dining that can't readily adapt to home delivery service.

They said that even when the 30 day ban is over they and other restaurants still face the reality that consumer spending power is down and many people will still not want to eat in restaurants because of the fear of being infected.

If the ban is lifted as planned after thirty days (near the end of this month) restaurants will face losing 55 billion baht in revenues this year.

But if it continues the hit could be 70 billion for 2021, according to their assessments.

Putting aside the argument as to whether they should or shouldn't be closed...... with an accelerating number of new cases and deaths lagging by up to three weeks...........they cannot justify opening up after the 30 days.......they have dug a whole for themselves.

Delta variant is dominant now. It spreads incredibly easily. While dining in masks are off. Outside of Phuket the percentage of the population that is fully vaccinated is teeny tiny. Restaurants need to be closed for indoor dining until Thailand gets its vaccination program together.

Agree....and the government need to furlough the staff as they did in the uK.

You can say that again. My wife's nephew has just tested positive after coming into contact with another person who tested positive. They hadn't seen each other for several months and had a 20 minute lunch in his office, even though office rules didn't allow people to dine together. That was enough to infect him..

I've read with Delta maskless you can  get infected much much quicker than that.

To wit, about infection via fleeting contact.

Most of the chain type eateries I guess... but they have the deeper pockets and clout at the bank.

Lets work the figures:

7% VAT on 70'000'000'000 revenue, the huge losses (which can be carried forward for five years) on corporate tax, income and other tax .....

Are you sure you need the submarines, the airport extension, the bridge across the Gulf of Thailand, the railway extension from Phitsanulok to Rangoon, the railing to Danang in Vietnam or the rail crossing from Chiang Mai via Chiang Rai to China?

Just wondering, who on Earth is paying for all this - certainly not me!

Nbd. Some people feel scared. That's what we should focus on.

"Nbd".  I had to look that up.  New-speak.  We used to say "BFD."
