Recently the low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is advertised as a miracle cure for Erectile Dysfunction but does it really work or just over overestimated?

Dr. Suntchai Wirotsaengthong, Urologist at M centre, BNH hospital shares more with us about this promising therapy.

1. What it is and how does it work?

The low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) uses energy from electromagnetic waves to trigger a process called neovascularization – the process of forming new blood vessels. This helps improve blood flow in penis and erection is enhanced then.

With a 20-minute-session of Shockwave, approximately 5000 shots are shot all around the penis. It’s a simple and no preparation needed procedure.

2. It’s not “one size fits all” treatment

There are many factors leading to Erectile Dysfunction such as vascular problem, stress, lack of male hormone – testosterone or it is consequence from your pelvic surgery or some types of medicine like hypertension medication, nasal decongestant, antidepressant.

Since Shockwave helps to repair the old damaged blood vessels, form the new ones and boost up the blood circulatory system in the penis, it is ideal therapy for vasculogenic Erectile Dysfunction.

However, the condition of patient should be evaluated first. Only Mild to Moderate Erectile Dysfunction cases are suitable for this method. That means if your International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) is below than 11, or you used to take PDE5 inhibitor medicine like Viagra or Cialis but it doesn’t help so Shockwave is not for you.

3. It doesn’t happen overnight

Although Shockwave therapy is clinically proven efficacy with its advantages like non-invasive, no pain, no unwanted side-effect, it doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s up to case by case but normally a patient has to wait for 3 to 4 times of treatment to feel the significant improvement. In fact, one course of 6 sessions (one session per week) is highly recommended. After 06 months to 1 year, patient may have a repeat course.

Shockwave therapy for Erectile Dysfunction may offer the great benefit for patient if you’re right candidate. However, you should figure out the root cause before pursing any type of treatment.
