Lamppostgate: DSI to investigate alleged corruption in purchase of streetlights

A member of the Ratchathewa sub-district administration and local residents yesterday went to the Department of Special Investigation in Bangkok to urge them to investigate a scandal now known as "Lamppostgate".

 

This was the purchase of fancy lamppost decorations in inappropriate places wasting public money.

 

In the Bang Plee, Samut Prakan area this involved lampposts adorned with "kinarees" (mythical nymphs) and solar cell panels. 

 

Samer Noiwanich said they were a waste of public money and put in out of the way places utilising expensive materials for no reason, reported Daily News. 

 

They had been in place for many years and were torn down and renewed in Ratchthewa in 2013.

 

The State Audit Office of the Kingdom of Thailand said then that there were irregularities in the procurement of the posts but nothing was done. 

 

Replacements were put in nonetheless. 

 

Now he and the residents of the sub-district have asked DSI chief Pol Col Korawat Panpraphakorn to look into the matter. 

 

Should the DSI find a case to answer this could mean a criminal prosecution against the department responsible for the installation of the designs, notes ASEAN Now.

Were you on your way to Suggestions restaurant, I lived on that road, Pattanakarn road, since it was resurfaced it is now used by all and sundry as a 4 km straight line racetrack, not bad for a 50 kph road, never ever seen a cop out there taking speed checks.
