BANGKOK (NNT) - The government’s effort to secure COVID-19 vaccine supplies continue to be a hot topic of discussion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today it has been in talks with several countries to secure a variety of vaccines on different platforms in all available occasions, both in terms of purchases and donations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Spokesman and Director General of the Department of Information Tanee Sangrat, revealed today that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been pursuing diplomatic channels to assist in the government’s vaccine procurement efforts from several countries, both in terms of price negotiations and donation requests.

He said the Ministry has reached out to several countries, including China, the United States, Russia, France, and India for this purpose.

As for China, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai, said today the MFA commenced talks on available vaccines in October 2020 during the official visit of the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi to Thailand, and has brought up the topic of vaccine procurement on many occasions.

Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs said he made a phone call to Mr Wang Yi on 22nd April, in relation to the donation of 1 million doses of Sinovac vaccine by the Chinese government to Thailand.

Mr Don said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had in April initiated talks on a vaccine exchange with several countries, including Australia, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and the United States, with the first batch of exchanged vaccine anticipated to arrive in Thailand in September.

As for the United States, the Thai Foreign Minister said theMinistry of Foreign Affairs had initiated talks with the U. S. government on vaccine procurement in February this year, and had discussed the matter with the United States Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, during her official visit to Bangkok on 2nd June.

On 3rd June, the U.S. government announced a plan to donate 80 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to several countries including Thailand. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now in the process of coordinating details with U.S. agencies, while the Ministry of Public Health has already made preparations to receive the donated vaccine, including the logistics and distribution plan.

Despite not being an official member, the Thai government has made donations of 200,000 U.S. dollar to the World Health Organization’s COVAX global vaccine equity initiative. This allows Thailand to sell, exchange, and distribute Thai-made vaccines with participating countries in the campaign in the future.

Tin cup time.

I will gladly pay you tomorrow for a vaccine today.

Hopefully some countries will help.

Not sure Thailand is a reliable partner on a swap forward though.

And its awesome the MoFA is helping out but we don't need another government entity providing vaccine shipment status.

A lot of talking and negotiating. Where are the purchase orders for 150 million doses? Anything else is just smoke.

And where there is smoke…..there is fire!  The crematoriums are being overrun and they can’t burn the bodies fast enough.   Thailand.  The new India.

sums it up

only interested in selling not procuring - money money money

and lets not forget this revelation today

"US pharmaceutical companies are said to have walked away from Thailand rather than contravene the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act."

Thailand has a worldwide reputation...for all the wrong reasons. This is the only country I know where both money and BS talk!

That leaves out who walks... Cabinet minister who made his money in flour smuggling.

Vying for bragging rights when there's nothing to brag about.

he did forget to mention an offer from an indian ambassador from december of several million doses. This offer was blatantly refused by the very minister. That was on ground, that foreign ministry doesn't deal with vax issues.

just a few days later thailand has ordered the first 2mln sinovac, now with total 31mln. A little poor quality one, but with 15% profits going to the CP conglomerate
