The Royal Thai Police spokesman has warned his compatriots about falling victim to ransomware attacks after IT companies in the US were hit with 2.2 billion baht in demands.

Ransomware is malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid.

Pol Col Krissana Pattanacharoen urged people to back up their important data and get the very best ransomware protection they could afford and update their systems regularly.

He also warned people about clicking on links or files they are unsure about.

INN said that hundreds of IT firms in the States were the subject of extortion attempts by Russian hackers totallying US 70 million.

How are they supposed to resist: "click here and win 1000000 Baht?

Why is he standing in the way of people making money?

I clicked on a link from a Nigerian prince and in the next few days I will be a very wealthy man.

To late.

Hospitals and large companies were attacked last year.  They continue to be due to poor IT maintenance and pirated software.

Humans are the weakest link in cyber security. Just don't click on BS links, have an antivirus and firewall up to date and all will be fine
