Well known Buddhist preacher and monk Sakda Suntharo went on Facebook to explain how one of his disciples had been conned out of 50,000 baht.

Phra Sakda has 2 million followers of his online religious advice and is based in the temple of Wat Rai Pa Thamma Phimuk in Trat in Thailand's far east.

He said that he had been contacted by a kamnan (local official) whom he had known for 20 years who said he had transferred the 50,000 baht as requested.

Sakda said he had no idea what he was talking about and had never made a request for money in this way.

It emerged that a criminal with a voice sounding very like the famous monk had contacted the kamnan purporting to be him.

He had instructed the kamnan to go to a branch of 7-eleven where the counter staff added 50 lots of 1,000 baht to fifty accounts for online shopping, reported Daily News

The kamnan complied thinking he was really talking to his religious inspiration and thinking that he must be in quarantine and unable to get out.

The 7-Eleven staff and Sakda went to the Trat police to file a report and they are now investigating the phone number used in the transactions.

The crisis sharpens the wit of the “wily”

the good Abbot can make sure that the idiot Kamnan receives his good karma anyway.... it is the kind thought that counts, not the earthly money...
