It would really be helpful, if this is for real, for you to indicate where in Thailand you happen to be.

If you are looking for the best price for most drugs I would recommend Save On Drugs located outside Carrefour stores here in Bangkok.

When I first came here to live, I went to a drug store and talked to the owners,I told them that they would be my only source of purchase and I would need on a monthly basis XXX and XXX and XXX the first of each month,could they supply me, The owner said yas and he did as long as I lived in CMX,but I moved to central Thailand and I did the same thing,and 1 said yes and so the second month,he was out of XXX,so I went to another and the lady said she would be glad to have me as a customer and she has never failed in the last 3 years.Just to be safe ,I keep an extra month ahead of the important ones. :o

You'll have more luck looking for the drugs by generic name rather than by the US brand names. That way if a European equivalent is available, but the US brand isn't you're still in business. So, getting out my trusty drug guide:

Digitek = digoxin

Toprol-XL = metoprolol succinate, extended time release

Lipitor = atorvastatin

Plendil = felodipine

Vioxx = rofecoxib

Actos = pioglitazone

Plavix = clopidogrel

You have the names of the rest already. The idea of having one drugstore supply you regularly is precisely the plan I intend to use when I move to Thailand.

I would not check BKK unless you plan to live there,or want to make the trip every month,Wait til you get to your village and then go to the pharmacy of your choice and with your drug list,they will be able to convert the names to the specific drug brand that they carry and can supply, they might have to order some special for you,but most are glad to do it if you will be a regular customer.

I have found that in a lot of places,you go to the druggist if you are sick and the doctor if you need an operation,druggists usually know what drug you need for a certain ailment. I told my druggist the names and even showed them the things,some names were the same and some different,but most made by the same co. as my American stuff.

Don't worry about it,,I can't spell either.

But why not obtain more than one month at a time? There is a huge markup on drugs at most places and the choice of supplier (when you need that many) can be important.

Sounds like a good idea if you have a place to store them,some cannot be stored in to much heat,and you will have a substantial cash out lay,,not good if you live day to day,or as some say, One Day At A Time. Might not be alive next month.

But now I get a 2 months supply, I pay my hospital the same as I payed the druggist and then in about a month I get a payoff from my insurance co. So now they really don't cost me nuthin.. :D But I must use a gov't hospital pharmacy for my prescriptions or they won't pay. :o

True. Not one size fits all. But I would be very concerned about storage upcountry as even in Bangkok many drug stores do not keep air-con on after customers depart and the chance of fake medications is much higher outside of Bangkok. At least buying from a government pharmacy you have more assurance of real drugs and at a good price. It is the corner general store/drugs shop that would concern me most.

LOP; you amaze me,and I am disheartened that you think that the people and merchants in the fair city of BKK are more honest and reputable that our own upcountry people and business men. I have always leaned the other way.

When I go into the pharmacy that I still use when ever I can as she was good to me when I first came here, and I ask for a certain drug,she gets down a box and pulls that long slip of paper on which is the history of the drug and all the tests of it and the precautions and what it is for,makers name and everything. like the time I wanted to buy prep H suppository's,,she said O no can sell,look at the date,I said don't worry about it,I am just gonna shove em up my ass anyway.

But I have never had a bad experience with an upcountry druggist,BKK is where I don't trust folks,thats where you are gonna get it in the shorts if anywhere.I only go there for a visa extension and I am afraid they gona fuk me some way on that.

Nope,just don't trust them city slickers. :o

My post was not a comment on honesty - is was about facilities.

I base my comments on government tests that are done and reported often. The bulk of fake drugs are upcountry, not close to the authorities where they can be found out. And I am mostly concerned about storage. That hot sun does not do drugs much good. At least in the cities there is a better chance they have been in airconditioned areas.

I am not saying upcountry folks are dishonest; and most people in Bangkok are from upcountry in any case. But the bulk of fake and substandard drugs have been found in upcountry/border regions. Much of it being fake imports. Few folks that visit the local shop are going to know the anti-biotic they just bought only contains 10% of what it should.

Most merchants do not even know the source of what they sell. The drugs are made or imported in Bangkok and the further you get from the source the more likely they are old or false.

You will probably only find clinics and hospitals as most doctors do not have private practice (closest would be a clinic). Most people go to hospital out patient department.

Search this site for "BUPA" and you will find the most popular insurance plan but it is only fully good if you enroll under age 60 and top age is 65 unless enrolled earlier. The have web site you should be able to find and will probably answer your questions if you email them.

OK LOP;;not that I disagree with you,but when we hash it out then the folks get more of their questions answered and feel more at ease and can make more intelligent choices,,

I do find that a lot of doctors here have their own offices as well as working in the hospitals,both gov't and private.

My ortho doc works at the gov't hospital,and is at the private hospital 2 days a week and also has an office somewhere in town,also the opthamoligist,who has his own shop,My pulmanary specialist also works at hosp. and has his own office, and also the physical therapists,some work evenings and off hours at the private hosp. and at the gov't hospital.

But about meds, I do not take to many except for lung infection,and then I get ciprobay made here I think and it is about 10% of what it cost in the states,same with my enfazima meds,they are made in england,same as the ones I bought in the states and also about 10% cost and the doc gave me some pills for my shoulder,when I needed more,I took them to the druggist and she said that the hospital had given me a Thai made generic,and she gave me the same drug made in USA for a less cost. :o
