(Reuters) - The risk of Bell's Palsy, a type of facial paralysis, is higher after Sinovac Biotech Ltd's COVID-19 vaccine CoronaVac, but should not be a deterrent to vaccination, according to a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal.

"The beneficial and protective effects of the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine far outweigh the risk of this generally self-limiting adverse event," the study mentioned.

The study involved 28 clinically confirmed cases of Bell's Palsy after Sinovac's CoronaVac shot reported among nearly 452,000 individuals who received first dose of the vaccine, and 16 cases after Pfizer/BioNtech's vaccine detected from more than 537,000 individuals.

"Our findings suggest an overall increased risk of Bell's palsy after CoronaVac vaccination," according to the study.

The study performed in Hong Kong assessed the risk of the adverse event within 42 days of vaccination.

The mechanism of Bell's palsy in patients after vaccination is unclear, the study acknowledged, calling for further investigation.

"Bell's Palsy after vaccination is rare, and most symptoms were mild and got better on their own," Sinovac representative Liu Peicheng said in an written response.

Liu said Sinovac has not detected Bell's Palsy risk in its analysis of data from Chinese disease control authorities, the Uppsala Monitoring Centre of the World Health Organisation, or its unit's database for adverse events after immunization.

"According to the current data, the benefits and protection of CoronaVac far outweigh the possible risks," Liu said. "The public should be fully vaccinated in time with CoronaVac to prevent COVID-19 infection and block virus transmission."

Wonder what else they might've "accidentally" missed,

Sinovac the vaccine that keeps on giving....

Did you read it all? From the op:

They must be joking right ?

Maybe they need to talk to people that have/had Bell's Palsy.... a type of facial paralysis = Yes + slurred speech, that was after 1st and only Flu Vaccination in UK 20 years ago  .... got better on their own ? facial paralysis is much better after about 12 years, slurred speech still waiting on that....  No I do not want that again

Here's an idea: promote it as chance for free Botox treatment of a sort

I had Bells Palsey about 14 years ago in Pattaya, completely recovered in about 5 weeks.

I had two Sinovac jabs here in the Philippines, last one 6 weeks ago. No side affects at all, not even arm soreness.

It seems its possible with any of the vaccines. A friend of mine in the USA got bells palsy after his 2nd shot of the Pfizer vaccine.

Yes, an example today of a New South Wales government Minister on TV and one eye drooping/almost closed. He had no idea what it was and people were ringing in with great concern for him.

I don't suppose he had had SV vax (unknown in Oz)!

Bells palsy is a not uncommon affliction = not fatal and most recover in a few weeks. A sort of mini stroke. What they didn't say is how many would have suffered if not vaccinated. The increased risk may be just a few cases per 100,000.

Table 1 shows that the expected number of unrelated "background" cases during an equivalent period in 2020 was about 26+/-3 per 100,000.  The inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac) is believed to have caused be associated with an additional 4.8 cases per 100,000, while the mRNA (Pfizer) have caused is thought to be associated with additional 2 cases per 100,000.  In other words, for every person who is affected by the vaccine, 5-10 times as many people will coincidentally develop Bell's Palsy for reasons having nothing to do with vaccination.

The effect size is very small.  It is also important to note that the investigation compared two different vaccine technologies for which data were readily available -- Sinovac (inactivated virus) and Pfizer (mRNA)  It did not compare Sinovac or Pfizer against other vaccines of the same types.   Other vaccines use the same inactivated virus tech as Sinovac (for rabies, influenza, Hep A, etc.), and possible increased incidence of Bell's Palsy for these diseases and vaccines have been investigated elsewhere.

Cowboy's information indeed shows how trivial the risks of Bell's Palsy from vaccination are, just as i guessed.

its that or shingles with the others

SEPT Last year had the 1st part of the Pneumonia vaccine = went into a coma was in Hospital 4 days, then the Dr cancelled part 2 + cancelled the Shingles vaccine.

severe allergic reaction to Vaccines can cause death if it isn't treated right away at the emergency room............  Me have a long list of Vaccines + Med's that causes allergic reaction since a kid..
