The high-rolling career of ‘Joe Ferrari’, top cop in corruption spotlight

The public is watching closely to see if the scandal over a drug suspect shown tortured to death at a police station will trigger reforms or merely deepen the flaws of the Royal Thai Police.

At the center of the scandal, which has made global headlines, is former rising star Thitisan Utthanaphon – a police colonel with a penchant for supercars. Dubbed “Jo Ferrari”, Thitisan is also frequently pictured with good-looking female celebrities on his arm.

What happened?

On August 6, the death certificate of 24-year-old drug suspect Jirapong Tanapat recorded an amphetamine overdose as the likely cause of death.

No suspicions were aroused until lawyer Decha Kittivittayanan urged an investigation into reports that police officers in Nakhon Sawan had arrested Jirapong on August 5 before suffocating him to death at the station during an attempt to extort Bt2 million.

Police had freed his alleged female accomplice in exchange for her promise to keep quiet about the killing, Decha told his 500,000 Facebook followers.

No, let him stay out of prison ... just strip him of his medical certificate.

It has been alleged that his father-in-law who is the police chief of Provisional Police Region 6 assigned Joe to Nakorn Sawan. Joe got his back covered with such a powerful and related police chief. Wonder his father-in-law is being investigated and what happen to the victim’s girlfriend who witnessed the crime. Is she under police protection? This case has his dirty fingerprints on many senior police officers. That translate to case watered down as it progresses till public attention waned and next big police corruption reared their ugly head. Police reform is a joke in Thailand.

He was informed by caused death, they are unlikely to inform them they had placed bags over his head and he had suffocated.

Strange that they do not seem to do autopsies on unexpected deaths, or all deaths in custody.

Guess this also may not have been first time a death cert issued for death in custody in that region

Sitting here, I wonder what people are outraged about Jo Ferrari's actions. People are focussing on his cars.....but for goodness' sake, he murdered someone. Prayut's first reaction was that he was damaging the "image" of the RTP....but for goodness' sake, he murdered a suspect. No-one should  have to worry about getting murdered by the police when they get arrested....

Really?

I wonder if the whole thing going to end up like the Red Bull kid  or the lady p.m. or on your guard by the police slip through the dragnet and left the country to live a very good life abroad TIT

Why free his female accomplice? Surely her knowledge of the whereabouts of any drugs would be the same? But possibly not the whereabouts of any money! Blah blah blah!

An amoeba with a total lobotomy could dismantle Jo's story in its sleep!

Let's see how the prosecution handles it?

Erm....."the lady p.m." being the democratically elected leader of the Thai government ousted by the nationalist thugs of Suthep and Chan o cha?

Your post is the epitome of false equivalence by comparing Yinluck to the Red Bull killer.

Truth is that this is a very hard and scary case, harder than the story of the kidnapping and torture of the taiwanesse businessman by a group of corrupted policeman.

this case is worse becuase we can see how a whole police station is dirty to the core, how they

are experienced in covering such cases and how even the health system is collaborating.

those cases should use as warning lights to all expats.

makes me think about leaving this country for good while i am still alive.

Perhaps I missed it but isn't the allegation that one of the lawyers was trying to extort millions from Joe new?

It wasn't drugs or the money, it was No1 supplier they were after.

What if they ever mistake you for a drug peddler? Could be an honest mistake.  The fact that you'll deny it will only make it more "necessary" to torture you for a confession! Nobody can want such a police force.
