This will be my son's 3rd successive school year of interruptions.

Kids are pretty resilient.

Hopefully in a few years time this will be in the history books.

6 hours a day of online learning has also put a dent into my golf game.

We like to think they are. Early years education is so important though.

Good luck on your swing!

You should have the option to keep your kids at home until you feel comfortable sending them to school. My kids school catered for this before.

I should have the option of sending my kids to school.

Your kids in an  average year have a higher chance of dying in a traffic accident on the way to school.  Where do you draw the line?  Allowing in home schooling to prevent road deaths?

Life's a balance of risks, along with the rewards.  Unless you want to hunker down in your basement and shun all human contact until the Zeta variant passes.

I've still not heard anything definite about a reopening date for schools, so it may be a bit longer yet.  If they wait for all children to be vaccinated they will never open again. I truly hope it will be before the end of September.

Wife said to me over dinner the other night she wanted to repeat the kids, my reply was; is this because of Covid, yes she replied, I said, "up to you honey",

I have had my 1st dose of Pfizer, wife zero, kids zero, so it looks like we will all have to remain in the house until the big bad wolf huffs enough to go away or decent vaccines arrive for them, me thinks the latter it will be.

For me, it's the fact that my 6-year-old has been pretty much confined to the condo since April, with no socialisation with kids his own age.

That's really tough.

At least were surrounded by cousins that play with our children.

I can totally understand the need for school and the social well being for your child.

Will get through this.

Good luck!

Similar for my son. He had online classes for April - July and this term started online on 23 August. Not ideal for a class of 22 6-year-olds. I'm hoping he might get back to school before the end of September.

Me too. I asked him this evening and he has no idea nor have his mates.

They may push for vaccinations in September and October (October is the mid year vacation for Thai schools). I think Noverber is the earliest they will open. Some foreigh teachers just got their first vaccination recently, and most students are not vaccinated. I think primary schoo kids will not be back to school this year, but as 12-18 y.o can get vaccinted, there may be a push to get them back to school. Then some parents won't want that, so teachers may have to somehow teach at school then possibly have to accomodate those that don't want to attend. This could be a real mess.

Children are barely affected by this!

The tops causes of death in children are still by road accident and by drowning -- as they always have been!

Because most children have not been exposed to the virus. Put them in school with no precautions and there will be thousands of cases within one week. How many may die? Not so many, but there will be a LOT of kids very ill and in hospital.

My wife got called into the kindergarten yesterday as they wanted to give each student and parent medicine - the wife claimed they said it was to help with covid and for opening the school later, though I can't see it. Anyone else had the same happen with their school/kindergarten. The school also arranged covid vaccines, though the wife and friend had to travel from Pattaya to Bangkok !

Imagine it was your child getting sick and dying of covid. Would you still feel the same way then?

Bit of a daft argument in my book, since more kids are killed on the roads on the way to school than covid, yet school travel has not been banned.

How have most children not been exposed to the virus?

They have been living in the world just like the rest of us and have had the same kind of contact everyone else has had: going to 7eleven, the market, supermarket, going to mom's/dad's workplace, contact with relatives, contact with babysitter, contact with tutor, sometimes visiting friends, visiting malls throughout this whole pandemic (until very recent closures), on public transport, in elevators etc. etc.

You think they have been suspended in a bubble in their bedrooms for the last year and a half?

And how about all those in elderly care homes in the west that got infected badly? Those residents literally had no contact with the outside world except the nurse who comes to their room, yet care homes were utterly riddled with covid last year (with 80%-100% infection rate typically).

And do you have any idea how much physical contact kids have with everyone and everything around them? They are messy little disease spreading powerhouses.

Last year my son lost 2 1/2 months of school and this year they finished at the end of March with a return date around the first week of May. Tomorrow is September 1st and still no return date yet. So far this year he has lost 4 more months of schooling.

Has there been any online learning?

If not, they should waive the tuition fee (still doesn't make up for loss of learning).

Even with schools doing online study there should be a fair discount.

Another case of someone not understanding the nature of an epidemic.

It's you who doesn't understand, buddy.

Only the (few who are ) at risk should be isolating, instead of planet Earth crippling itself.

UK - My Cousin + husband + 2 boys + their wives have all been fully vaccinated, the oldest grandson is just out of Hospital 2 days ago - age 7 - spent 5 weeks in Hospital with Covid..

That sounds dreadful. Is there more to this story? Quite unusual.

I don't mean to make light of it, but it is an unusual anecdote - though I am sure it put the family through hell.

I assume the young lad wasn't vaccinated. The way you wrote it I wasn't sure.

Is he asthmatic or anything?

They can always add another year to schooling for the kids to catch up but cant add another to a dead child getting them vaccines is the answer and that may take a year or more. I'm sure every parent wants the kids back in school and not under their feet all day but this is better then a sick child

Or, they could vaccinate every adult who works at schools.

Maybe you shouldn’t call someone “buddy” like that, pal. Most people probably don’t appreciate that. Unless that’s what you were going for….

@2009. What do you find confusing about my post?

It is a fact that is shared with hundreds and thousands of other families, both Thai and farang across Thailand and to a similar extent world wide.

Millions of children in Thailand are or will be having serious problems in their futures and the children of this generation are the future of Thailand and many of them could, should and will be running the country when the current set pop their cogs which cannot be soon enough for me and millions of Thais who are fed up and sick to death of this current lot.

A little speech made by Oliver Cromwell which seems apt for Thailand at this time,

https://speakola.com/political/oliver-cromwell-speech-dismissing-rump-parliament-1653

20 April 1653, London, England

It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place,

which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice.

Ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government.

Ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess?

Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?...............

And ends with

I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place.

Go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!

So  the few, 4.5 million, who were at risk during the pandemic, should have all been isolating?

The few, 10,000, who died yesterday should have been isolating and were not?

Obviously.

Instead you have people losing their livelihoods and children losing their education (and socialization) who are not really at risk of dying at all.

The world has sacrificed a lot.

Perhaps it would have been better for the at risk people to live with restrictions, only.

Vast majority over the age of 60 (and vast vast majority over the age of 80).
