The flight I arrived on had about 240 passengers. The island is still ‘deathly quiet’ - that said, the Sandbox was never intended to reinvigorate tourism, it was intended to ‘test’ if foreign arrivals could enter Thailand without bringing in and spreading Covid-19, to that extend the test is successful. Now that they have demonstrated that foreign arrivals do NOT bring nor spread Covid-19, why do the authorities not open the country up ?

Sydebolle
Well, the empire will strike back - trust me on this! Those hotels, or for that matter, any surviving business, will have absorbed billions if not trillions of Baht of losses. Those losses will be carried forward in their accounting records and result in a more than wafer thin revenue base for the boys in the parliament and then there will be no more submarine shopping.

Popular Post jippytum
The Thai government and immigration have always been paranoid about foreigners having any rights with regard to land and property ownership. It is therefore amazing to witness the Chinese takeover of property and local businesses in recent years .Most of the income from Chinese tourists has been retained by Chinese owned companies with little benefit to the local economy. Many large companies in Thailand are owned by second generation Chinese. Short sited government policies ruled by greed give China a massive advantage in government to government purchases often to the determent of the Thai people . 7

They will sand over the water and build more condos there. Enjoy Phuket, Patong Beach, Kata Beach, Karon beach? It will be gone. The Chinese will cement over the ocean and build more condos. Enjoy Nana plaza? It's on it's last legs ... it will be replaced by a Chinese owned condo.

I tell you what, when I lived in China, even some Chinese people there told me about the bad reputation and behaviour of Chinese abroad. And I heard, when travelling to both, Hong Kong, and New Zealand, how unpopular mainland Chinese are because of their rudeness, and because of not following rules in the countries they travel to (e.g. driving on the wrong side on purpose). 2

No busses and no flights. Maybe it was those who couldn't leave. Probably not but it's a thought. The other reason might be in how they work out the figures. As hotels close then any occupants will hen be moved into the hotels that are still open. There is still the issue that more hotels seems to have been open but with statistics there are a lot of variables that have to be taken into account before you can come to any judgement. Stargeezr
Considering that COVID is a world wide pandemic, it is not only Thailand where all the hotels motels, and guest houses are suffering. Good thing that the hotel owners are a huge group of very very rich people. Even these rich people may not be as rich as they were if they want to keep their hotels from ruin. That is why other places in the world are opening up even though the COVID cases are still high. Money rules. Geezer
