Try and forgive me if this post is overly-paranoid.

Here goes..

If I (a U.S. national living in Thailand and hoping never to return to my homeland) were to have a baby with my Thai wife, does that potentially put me at risk of having to pay U.S.-caliber child support?

I believe the going rate for Thai child support is like 100 baht per day or something.  Fine by me. Glad to help out.  So, if that's the worst that could happen, then I couldn't care less.

But I do NOT want to face the risk (in the event the marriage dissolves) of having to go back to the U.S. and get a real job to pay a serious monthly sum to support my kid in Thailand.

Also, what about the prospect that the marriage dissolves, and then she (if feeling highly vindictive) uses the kid (who, I believe, would technically be an American citizen) as some sort of anchor-baby to get into the U.S., thereby forcing me to return to that place and work to support it (and her)?  Does this type of mess happen?

She can certainly hire a lawyer in us and skin you alive. The question is of she will bother. Most Thai women don't seem to have knowledge or patience.

Only if you gave your Thai wife access to the USA.

If you are over 50 years of age , have a retirement visa , if you are pressed to marry a Thai woman the regular Thai village marriage will suffice , no need for an Amphur registered wedding or registering a wife at the US embassy or making her a US citizen . In the event of the relationship failing you can pack your bags and leave with no ties , don't buy a house in her name unless you can afford to give it away . If you are worried about the woman getting pregnant have a vasectomy . While you live in Thailand your are only subject to Thai law on child support .

Something about Thais and why they don't pursue their wayward husbands for support.

My partner raised 2 for many years before I came along.

Didn't want to know about hitting the butterfly up for his required by law contributions.

I don't think you ought to be having kids with an attitude like that. If can't afford them, don't make them.

With his attitude I think he shouldn't be allowed to have sex at all...

A US court has jurisdiction in Thailand? I doubt it.  Making orders is one thing - enforcing them is another.

100bt per day child support? What a jerk. I spend that feeding stray dogs.

It's more like 1,000bt per day to raise a kid.

Are you a dog or something? What do you think?  Raising a child and giving them a quality of life isn't easy or cheap.  If you aren't going to protect the potential  offspring,  then you shouldn't  make one.  You want to pay as little  as possible,  and not what's needed.   That makes you a terrible  father already before the fact, and should consider if you are even ready to be a father.  You just want to be a biological father, and not a father.  Do the child a favor, as you are clearly  thinking about your pocket,  and the pleasure  of making a baby, and not what's  right for the child, you clearly  arent ready to be a real father.

You would actually have to apply to make the child a US citizen,  as it wouldn't  be born in the US, and it's not automatically considered a citizen because  the father, donated the DNA.

I can't believe you even asked something like this.  You want to make a child, but only do what the law and others require  you to do.  So pathetic!  You aren't father material and should not do the world, or the poor child a disservice by fornicating and being a donor only.  If the lady is smart she will see you coming a mile away, and make you be fully responsible.   Do you even realise how selfish, and sub par your question  makes you sound.  Imagine if your parents  only gave you the bare minimum growing up, not because they were poor, but because they were selfish.  Imagine they had eaten fresh meals, bought themselves nice clothes, slept in sanitary conditions,  and they took care and spoiled  themselves,  but they bought you used clothes, cheap shoes, and fed you subpar foods daily.  Thats not love.. that would them doing for you what is required.   Imagine how your life would have turned out? How you would feel being treated so bare?  Thats not love.  If you arent going to unconditionally love the child you should've  make one.  You sound immature enough just saying you only want what the local country  wants for the child, as its so substandard,  minimal,  and disgusting.  You feel this best for the child is 100thb a day!  Even what the American government requires  as child support  in the USA isnt always enough  to provide a life for a child.  You should grow up, stop thinking about your wallet,  and see a child is about love not money.  I am glad that there are actually upstanding  men in this world that already know this.  Your question  is so shocking!

.... add the comment 'I couldn't care less'.

They could certainly enforce it by revoking his passport. US citizens have to obey US laws doesn't matter where they are. It seems like everyone knows this except US citizens.

She can't take it to a US court.  So don't worry about it.
However - do your part to help the kid live a decent life.
Be a Dad, be part of the child's life, give the mother adequate funds to raise the child in a good, middle-class (Thai) environment but paying those funds gives you access to your child.  Unless you don't want access to your child.  Do the right thing and you'll have nothing to worry about.  Don't be a jerk.

OP...It's been my long lasting belief that there are too many of the wrong people procreating...that's both men and women. You provide the seed, pay for the deed. Don't stick the bill with the rest of us, and that's what happens when you cheapen your unintentional offspring akin to something on Ebay or Alibaba.

Perhaps if your wife has access to a Thai lawyer with connections she may be able to make life difficult for you.

I'd like to think so.

From what I'm told, only a few US laws apply outside the US - I doubt child support is one of them.
