Thai PM’s odd suggestions cause quite a stir

"Come gather 'round people

Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin'
And you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'"

actually he is correct in that every child should learn to swim, it should be mandatory ....  as for the language I have always said schools MUST make english a requirement.  A child that can speak English has a far better opportunity to travel and advance in life through career prospects, than one that can't.

I think the second language he was referring to is Chinese.

In terms of content, everything is correct. And the fact that you should cut your toenails regularly, eat well and sleep well every day would also be right. But what relevance does it have for the current economic, political, social and health situation in Thailand?

Learning to swim has a lot of relevance to the flooding.

Sad that such basic common sense should be called odd. He should be allowed to make such comments without being told 'fix the country first '. The two are not mutually incompatible. Sad also that even many (most?) first world countries do not teach children to swim in school time. Survival in this world is not all about intellect. ????

noooow - I got the missing link: He wants to say that Thailand is neglecting her toenails!

It is absolutely true that when children roll into society with a command of the English language and can also work with a computer, their chances increase enormously. For the Western world it is an advantage if the Thai children are more English oriented than Chinese.

He also suggested that Thai people should exercise and study two languages to survive.

Perhaps he could help with that by paying the wages that attract real teachers and actualy letting them teach. That involves failing pupils who need to work harder and don't reach the required standard in their exams - not requiring teachers to manipulate their results so they pass.
