My outraged (Thai) wife warned me not to get involved and instead went to look for security, of which, of course, there was none to be found anywhere.

Wise wife there. Looking after your safety as there is a certain 2-legged deviant species who manage to get passports and covertly board planes.

Did you happen to have a glimpse of what they were wearing? Was it something like this..

The rationale behind wearing masks is to stop you spreading infection, rather than being infected. Since every tourist entering the country has already been tested/quarantined etc, maybe multiple times, they will not be an infection source. That could be their attitude.I appreciate they may be infected whilst here, and should wear masks. I wear one to ensure I have a quiet life and don’t get any more disapproving looks than I already suffer.

how do you know they are newly arrived tourists
and not people who have had enough of the pointless draconian measures for the last 2 years......

you got your mask on, what are you worried about?
you can always choose to stay home if you are that concerned.

I’ll never infringe Thai mask laws because I’m not returning to Thailand until they’re well and truly gone. If that’s never, then so be it. Loathe the things. I’ve had to wear one in Australia for a total of 40 minutes while getting my two AZ shots, that was bad enough.

rules do not apply to the arrogant foreigners.

not only masks, but also the non smoking rules........which do not apply to them of course.

its why i do not socialise with foreigners here.........

many a time I have started to enter a restaurant.......spot a (normally fat) foreigner lighting up his fag, so I about turn and leave.........

luckily i have many places to go that do not allow the football shirt brigade to do this.......

So tell me how the mask protects one. It states  clearly on the box that it has no protection against a virus. It is all todo with conformity and obedience. The membrane is too large to stop a virus you would need an N100 or Heppa filter to stop a virus it is just too small. Do your research and turn the TV off. Heads Up

I look forward to reading your scientific research paper, in which journal will you be publishing ?

You are trying to convince people with facts and logic where you must use emotions and feelings. You know: like unicorns and rainbows....

Here in Patong when I pass a tourist not wearing a mask, I say as passing “wear a gd mask”. I don’t make eye contact, slow down or look back. Many “I don’t care opinions” here which I personally don’t understand. Such a simple step that might help slow down the increasing infections on the island. Some say, none of my business, but I  say - well the mods have shut me down multiple times for my response to those BM’s. Not saying the mods are wrong.

Well  before new tourists arrivals there have been a cadre of "rebels" wearing the mask pulled down over their nose. I avoid them myself...not because I'm worried about infection...only because they act like adolelscents who can't behave in a society in which they are guests.

Bangkok must be different to Pattaya and surrounding areas, because here I see countless Thais without masks. I agree though anyone breaking the law by not wearing one, farang or Thai, should be booked.

I also think that because there are a lot of elderly farang here, a lot of them forget to pull up their mask after exiting their home or car. I've done it countless times, the last being yesterday. It's incredibly embarrassing, because I don't want the locals to think that I'm an uncaring foreigner. I ask my Thai wife to let me know if I forget, but her memory's worse than mine. There's no cure for a failing memory.

Having worn the various types of masks that are typically worn for the wuhan virus, when I first worked with sanding sheetrock (or gypson board), as well as just a cloth mask, I would still have to blow the sanding dust out of my nose.  And that dust is much larger than the 5-10 micrometer size respiratory droplets that can potentially carry hundreds to thousands of the virus.

I only wear a mask when required to not because I think it will protect me from catching the virus from someone else's sneezing or coughing.

What I now wear when working around high dust environments and which I would use to protect me from respiratory droplets is something like this.  A P100 mask.

Westerners usually refuse to wear masks. There is one case in Malaysia where a westerner refused to wear mask and even call Malaysia a 'communist' country, later she was fined.
